How much liquid chlorine

Per recommendations on this site, I decided to stop using the 3 inch chlorine tablets in my chlorinator and use liquid chlorine instead. Is there a rough guideline of how much liquid chlorine to add in certain conditions. I have a 32 x 16 inground pool. After dumping 5 bags of shock in after startup, the chlorine level just registers about 1.0 I know it is a trial and error process, but how much liquid chlorine should I add. Thanks, Mike

How soon ? Depending on what type of shock it was, it added between 16 and 21 FC. To lose it quickly with low daily loss in the northeast early season is suspect.

You should Overnight Chlorine Loss Test.

How are you testing ?

I am using an AQUACHEK tester. I checked the chlorine this morning. Nothing. I added two more bags of shock, and the other half gallon of liquid chlorine. Will post back later with results.

I downloaded Poolmath. Not sure what it does ??
You configure your pool (volume, type etc.). Enter test results. Then you enter target results and chemical you are adding and it will tell you how much to add to reach your target.

It also keeps a log of your test results and additions if you subscribe 8$/yr.

I'd recommend getting a proper test kit. We don't rely on other testing pool store or aquachek, they are unreliable/inaccurate. Link-->Test Kits Compared

First, input your pool parameters in settings then go to FC ( free chlorine) input your CYA level, your current chlorine level and your target chlorine level, then fill in what type of chlorine (sanitizer) you will be using, if it's bleach (liquid chlorine) then the concentration (5 gal chlorine is usually 12.5% but check your label, sometimes 10%) Once you input all the information, at the bottom it will tell you how many ounces of liquid chlorine to add. If you have a green pool, check the SLAM button.

In addition to this, the section "Effects of Adding" is also a great tool to use to see how much your Chlorine levels will go up based on how much Liquid Chlorine you add. Best tool for any pool owner.

I use the effects of adding section to calculate how many pucks to get to my desired CYA level and when to switch from picks to liquid chlorine

OK, thanks everyone, I finally figured out how to use that Poolmath. Yesterday evening I added another gallon of liquid chlorine (10 %) to the pool, and put some 3 inch tablets in a floater. This morning the CL is 1.8, the PH is 7.8 and the ALK is 10.0 According to Pool math I still need to add some liquid chlorine, which I will do shortly. Thanks again for all the help and suggestions. Mike

It is chemically impossible to have a pH of 7.8 and a TA of 10. Check your testing methods.
