How much chlorine new fill?

After a few agonizing weeks of leveling and setting up we are ready to go. I received my test kit and tested initial results (filled from hose/city water):

FC: 0
PH: 7.5
CH: 100
TA: 40
I have entered the FC as 0 in pool math assuming I need to add some chlorine to start. It is saying 2 cups. Does that sound right? It is Intex 14 X 42 so 3500 gallons.
Kids are DYING to get in and swim but I am unsure if I am reading this correctly. Have read all of the pool math articles but I’m not sure is this 2 cups is the correct amount to start.

I did buy CYA (powdered) so I have it but thought since new fill I shouldn’t run the CYA test. Should I run it on the fresh water anyway before adding any chlorine?

Thanks so much for the quick response BTW. 😀
Nope, but do note CYA/0 ;) Sorry I'm commenting on a few threads and missed the "new", lol!

Anyways, hop into Poolmath app or here online (PoolMath) to get the amounts you need to add for your pool, don't forget to change the parameters to match your pool size & type (Target CYA/30 and FC/5-6)

Fresh fill will have 0 CYA, so you'll want to get some in there sooner than later to protect the FC that you are adding. It will disappear quickly in day light without any CYA.

As for your FC levels, you certainly want to get some added and can trust pool math if you have it configured for your pool size. It would be helpful to know what you are adding for chlorine and what your target is though if you want confirmation. The source and strength of your chlorine determines how much you'll need. Depending on your target FC and strength of the product you are adding 2 cups looks correct from some educated guesses I put into poolmath.

Ha np will add that going forward! I have pool math and entered in my pool size, it seems to be recommending what seems to be a very low target for FC (3):

Should I override the target to make is 5.5?
If you entered CYA/0 it would keep the FC at a safe level, as long as you can add them at the same time (not in same place of pool) and wait 30-45 min, you'll be safe to swim! Remember to suspend the CYA in water, not in skimmer and don't let it touch the liner

If you haven't already, read through the Pool Care Basics articles of Pool School. The content is very helpful and will give you more insight into the importance of each chemical, which ones to use, which ones to avoid, and the recommended levels for each of them, based on your pool setup. The knowledge in that section alone has been a huge help to me.

If you have a 10% chlorine from HD, update your pool math settings. Your screenshot had it as 6% bleach, you want that to say 10%

Thanks for catching that, have updated!

After updating % for chlorine, it is recommending 1 cup, 5 oz for chlorine. So I will add that using a measuring cup. For CYA it recommends 22 ounces:

Is it OK to use measuring cup (i.e. dry volume = liquid) so tad less than 2 and a half cups?
Absolutely! Esepcially in our smaller pools ;) And it doesn't hurt to not use the full amount, as it can be overestimated :) Although in your new pool, it's less of an issue to "overshoot"

Well I did it!
  1. Started pump/filter.
  2. Added 13 ounces of 10% chlorine (just slowly poured directly in water)
  3. Added 16 ounces (went a little less to be safe per recommendation, thanks #Splashpad!) of CYA to a sock. Spent 15 fretful minutes trying to Macgyver a device from which to suspend said sock in pool. With thunder rolling and skies darkening I decided to clip it to the edge, where it is now dangling in the water.
  4. Replaced cover, dashed inside. Fixing drink (it’s 5:02 here!)
I hope this is OK! Will my liner be ok for now? I will figure out a better way to dangle the sock for next time.. Also, this may be an extremely ignorant question, but is it OK for the pump to run during a storm? It is plugged into a GFCI outlet.

I seriously could not have done this without all of the help here on this forum. If I could, I’d have you all around for a (socially distant) drink. Thank you!!
