My pool is almost done and I’m wondering what the TFP method of pool maintenance is? I’ve read the basics of pool school but none of them explain how to work the TFP method or what it is.
The TFP method is basically a method that uses self testing from a quality test kit (either TF100 or Taylor K2006C) to determine your levels so you know what to add to your pool to keep it sparkling. We never put anything in our pool unless we know what the result will be.
The basic premise in a nutshell, is to keep your CYA and FC in the proper ratio at all times. If you do that, the rest is very easy to maintain.
The TFP method is primarily about testing yourself, often, and staying on top of the pool chemistry. You'll know really quick if something is going awry because your test results won't look right. Pool store methods involve a weekly test by a disinterested third party -- well, not really..... he's interested in selling products -- who won't look at the trends and see a problem coming.
And then he will sell you overpriced chemicals you can get elsewhere much cheaper or that you don't need. It's quite common to read of a pool store selling Calcium Increaser to someone with a vinyl pool. Why? There's no plaster to etch. The vinyl pool couldn't care less if it was filled with distilled water with no Calcium in it. But it makes a sale. So does Alkalinity Increaser.... Baking soda sold for 4-5 times the price of the grocery store. And various potions and miracle cures for problems he probably had a hand in creating. I wish I;d bookmarked it. A few years ago someone had the store test their water. Good. Next week, for no apparent reason, CYA plummeted. Sold stabilizer. Next week, CYA too high, need to drain. No lie.
We use cheaper but identical chemicals and only what the pool needs, not what the store needs to sell.
Anyway, here's a thread I bookmarked that shows what being Pool-stored looks like. Unable to see bottom...
