I have a 13,500 gallon pol with 500 gallon spa, SWG since it was new over 32 years ago. Last fall when I did the fall service the salt level was 3600. I have a whole house water softener using regular salt that also fill the pool Is the salt content of the soft water enough to raise the salt level that much?

Test a sample of your house fill water for salt and see what the ppm is.

No, what’s the salt level now?

Calcium and Magnesium displace sodium ions from the resin and the sodium added depends on the amount of hardness of the water.

0.466 ppm Total Hardness = 1 ppm sodium.

Note that it only adds sodium and not chloride, so the salt as measured by a K-1766 will not register.

However, a conductivity meter will register the sodium.

Also, ions that come in with tap water have balanced charges, so you will get roughly equal numbers of chloride ions in the fill water.

Ion exchange just substitutes sodium for calcium.

So, the total amount of TDS or “Salt” going into the pool will remain the same.

The only difference is that the ions going into the pool are sodium and not calcium.

Test the calcium hardness and total hardness of the water and the salt level of the water before and after the softener.
