I have a 18x36 oval vinyl pool. Around 25k gallons with 1.5” plumbing and the pump is 60 ft away. Hayward sand filter that says designed flow rate at 52 gpm. It’s an older pool with no fancy features. I am having to replace my Hayward 1hp super pump and am a bit confused when it comes to finding the best pump for my needs since my pump is not located close to my pool.
I am looking at going with a vs pump but my research has me concerned with going with to large of a pump. I’m not brand specific so that doesn’t matter. I’ve been looking at everything from super pump vs to superfood vst to the smaller Tristar pump. Any recommendations?

You can not go "too large" with a VSP as they have the ability to set the pump speed to your needs.
What voltage is powering your existing pump? That's important to helping with a suggestion.
A Waterway Power Defender PD165 will work on both 120/240V.
The PD270 will only work on 240V but, if you have that power, is a better option as it can be run at lower RPM to save more energy costs, paying for the higher price on its own.
For a simple pool, no automation, the Waterway pumps are a great option as they are a very good pump and cost much less than the "bigger' names.

Based on the posts I see in here, it seems numerous of us are opting for the Calimar 3.0hp. VSP, and they are cheap enough that the extended warranty is a no-brainer. I have a similar sized pool as you, had a Hayward 1.5hp single speed Superpump and Pentair T60 sand filter. I replaced the Hayward with the Calimar and use the 4 intervals to change the speed throughout the day. With similar filtering, my monthly electric bill has gone down about $50-$60. I put a flow meter on my 1.5 inch pipe so I could make sure I wouldn't overdrive the filter. I'm happy with the results.
