Heavy Duty chairs for the "heavy Duty" relatives?

Honestly, I never thought I would be needing to ask this..

However, as I'm looking at all the furniture options the one thing I'm seeing is a standard weight max of 300.

This weekend my brother in law came to help demo the hot tub, and I realized that he is way over that. Which got me thinking of my other in- laws & I am freaking out!

I think we need some heavy Duty (400+) per chair furniture for the outdoor eating area.

Where would you go to find these? Like looking at the girth of the chairs I've seen, it may be tough fits, let alone weight limits.

*Not that I am a super model by any means, but our immediate family can all sit in regular chairs.

It's a real issue. My wife and I don't weigh 300lbs combined so we didn't give it a second thought and bought all aluminum framed furniture to avoid any future rust issues but yes they are all rated at 300lbs. Then we have a 4th of July party and look at the group and begin to worry. Well, they have held up to that 300 limit and over that with no signs of damage. I don't think you'll find many options for 400lbs+ heck, most resort pools don't have anything rated for more than 300 and if they can get away with it I'm sure you can.

On a side note, when a 300lb uncle got on my fiberglass 230lb rated diving board my heat dropped. Somehow they both survived but I had to tell him it was made for "kids" to avoid a uncomfortable discussion.

That is how I feel when certain people are here.
This weekend I was holding my breath when he was getting up from our custom made wooden kitchen chairs, and I heard "crackle crackle" coming from them.
Plus when we were all in the Dominican last year I had forgotten that he mentioned the deck lounger was broken. I am thinking it broke after he played on it, as we had used it all week and no issues.
Thank you for also reminding me of the diving board!! I need to check the rating on that.

I do appreciate the frank answer and honesty with saying your furniture has held up to the job at hand.

Was thinking that commercial furniture would be rated a higher weight limit. Guess I'm glad not to have to go that way.

Just need them wide enough to not embarrass anyone in the family.
 
It's a huge issue, no pun intended. We also have several family members tipping 300 and one even pushing past 350. Shopping for outdoor furniture, shoot even regular furniture and you quickly realize the world is not built for overly large people.

Last year we had those cool retro looking metal chairs from like the 60's and 70's and they managed to collapse all but one of those. :( I have managed to find a few options that 'claim' to hold up to 350lbs however they both are plastic resin chairs and I fail to see how a resin chair will hold more than a sturdy all metal chair which all give a 250 limit!?! I am skeptical to say the least. I've even looked at commercial stuff but it's even iffy on limits. Of course they (family members) all say to build something out of wood but who wants huge clunky oversized wooden chairs/benches. Makes me almost want to just be blunt and blurt out to put the junk food down!!! Lol

Had to shop high and low for steps that would work, luckily the confer steps hold 400lbs so we're at least good there.

Well they say its rated for 350lbs not hat it will hold 350... The darn thing will flatten out like a pancake on the ground but when the person gets up the resin will pop back into it's original shape; hence the rating of 350 ;)

That's a great idea, however not an option this year with all the projects.

Plus would need to make them to enough to be at the table

Was actually thinking of getting a whole bunch of those outdoor bean bag chairs and cushion Ottomans and embroidering their names on them

With so many people weighing more than 250.. so crazy they rate them that way.

My husband is 6'3", and not ginormous.. not even really over weight (much)and he weighs 255..
Two of my in laws are twice the width of my husband.

I just spewed out my tea through my nose on that one! Picturing them going down, and the chair pooping back into place! LMAO!!!!
 
Here is something I totally forgot about but after yesterday I remembered and decided to move these up onto the pool deck.

It is a bench kit we found on Amazon several years back. The kits contains 2 resin ends and you buy 2x4's in what ever length you want up to 8ft and it makes a bench. I had these sitting around the yard and thought why not stain the wood to match the deck and use them for seating. So far they have gone over well up there and being 2x4's they hold the larger family members quite well. Mine are made 6ft long. There is also a kit that has backs and even one that the back flips to make a table and 2 together make a full picnic table. Seriously considering ordering the kit with the backs and making them actually fit the deck.

The struggle is real!! 6' 450lbs!! That's me. :) I found some resin chairs at Walmart that were extra wide and took my weight fine last year. I can feel the legs kinda wobbly though this year. I'm going to add some cross supports from leg to leg. Will report back as to if this is effective or not.

I have found many items recently rated for 350, but pretty sure that is the low end of the larger folks.
Not to mention that the "regular every day" stuff is only rated to 250.
Now I feel like posting signs that say " if you and your wife/girlfriend/husband/kid etc combined weigh more than 245, you may not sit on a lap, you must have your own chair for your own bottom" ?

See, and I'm just trying to be accommodating to my family. Life is hard enough without sitting on a chair and having it bust out under you.
I'm not 400 pounds, but not a bikini wearer either iykwim... I was reminded that I broke a chair, one of those wicker jobs, once. Not a comfortable situation.
 
I went through something similar when I was looking for patio dining furniture that would work for everyone who will be using the pool. I had my eyes on a particular set, but I realized that my priority was for everyone to be relaxed and comfortable and this set wasn't going to cut it. I ended up going with a deep seating lounge set with a coffee table and side tables as our combo relaxing/dining area. That way I was able to find chairs that were wide enough and sturdy enough to support everyone so that minds can be set to pool-side relaxing and not to pondering the structural integrity of the seating options. :)

thats exactly what I was going to add
Im only 6'3" and 240
But after enough years MOST people of a certain size understand their limitations. And should be considerate. BUT often the really big among us are that way because they dont stand much so, it prolly a good idea to have sturdy options before they collapse into something that wont take the strain ...
 
I can recommend The Porch Swing Company (The Porch Swing Company: Browse Patio, Front Porch, And Outdoor Garden Swings). I have bought several rocking chairs for less than $200 and a glider for less than $250 and all have a 600 lb weight capacity. I bought mine for the front porch and sun room but you could also use the furniture around the pool if you are looking for a conversation area. While not 300 lbs we're both heavy enough that I look for furniture that is sturdy when I sit down. There is nothing more uncomfortable than sitting in a chair and feeling it wobble.
