Hayward star clear filter big leak

I have a Hayward star clear plus c1200 filter for our 13,000 gallon in ground pool. 1-2 months ago t started spraying a ton of water out of the middle of the filter where the top half of the shell connects with the lower half.

I was thinking maybe the o ring needed to be replaced so I ordered a new o ring and some lube for the ring and installed it. I also replaced the filter at the same time and it was fine after that.

However today it started doing it again. I noticed we had lost about 3 inches of water from the pool and checked the filter and sure enough the water was shooting out again between the top and bottom halfs. I'm not sure what my issue is.

When it's not leaking like that I do not notice any sounds of leaking air or water anywhere. The only thing I do notice and I'm not sure if this is normal, but when the pump starts, the top half of the filter lid will raise up slightly and then when the pump is off it instantly goes back down. I have the knob at the top on very tight but it seems like when the pump runs their is extra pressure on there that forces the lid up just a little bit. I've noticed that happen when we first bought this house a couple years ago and it's never been an issue.

The pressure shows about 25 when it's not leaking. I generally clean the filter cartridge about 1-2 times a year and replace it once a year.

tmd,

Welcome to TFP... A Great resource for all pool owners with leaky plumbing... :drown:

If the top moves at all then the knob at the top is not tight enough or there is some problem with the threads...

Please look at page 6 of 8 in this manual... https://www.hayward-pool.com/pdf/manuals/StarClearPlus.pdf ... and make sure you have all the parts listed installed correctly.. especially numbers 1 thru 5...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks Jim,

I'll check the filter in the morning. And yes the top definitely moves. I can't move it myself but when the pump turns on, it moves up some.

I don't seem to recall seeing parts 3 or 4, so maybe that's the problem. I haven't noticed any problem with the threads. They looked ok to me but I'll double check all this in the morning.

So all the parts are there and I took some pliers and made sure the rod was tight. I did clean the filter out and it's not leaking at this moment.

We are about to get our pool resurfaced with wet edge pebbles and the pool contractor did say he recommended replacing this cartridge filter with a multi cartridge filter. He said the c1200 was almost a bit to small for this pool.

Does that seem correct for a 13,000 gallon pool?

tmd,

The bigger the filter the less often you have to clean it. :p

I too would say your filter is on the small side for your pool.

With the problems you are currently having, I would go with a new filter.

Thanks,

Jim R.
