Hayward Pro Grid vs Perflex?

Hello All,

First time pool owner and first time poster.

Live in the midwest. Pool open 4 months of the year. I have a 24,000 gallon in-ground pool. Upgrading all my mechanicals. New heater and variable speed 1.5hp pump just ordered. Last piece of the puzzle is the filter. Currently have a sand filter which I am replacing for a DE filter. I am trying to determine which would be a better option, the Perflex EC75A or the Pro Grid 3620 or 4820. Pros and cons would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Jim

I agree with JamesW, you want to oversized a filter as much as your budget can afford. A bigger filter means much less backwashing and cleaning. I have the largest Pentair QuadDE filter possible and I only tear it down to clean it once per year as the pressure almost never rises more 10-15% over clean pressure. Given your short season, if you oversize the filter then you’d only have to clean it once in the beginning and then maybe again when you winterize. You would likely not need to backwash ever which is a very good thing because backwashing is harder on the filter’s internal components and, since it’s a DE filter, you won’t have to constantly mess around with DE powder.

If going DE, I recommend the Pentair Quad 4, 60 square feet.
Reason being is that this filter has "cartridges" inside instead of thge curved panels.
This allows it to be opened and cleaned and re-assembled (without the usual headaches) significantly easier than other models.
Pool techs love to see this filter when called for a filter clean.

The reason I shy away from the Pentair Quad 4 is the costs of cartridges. $48 a piece times 4. Besides the cleaning ability of a DE filter, this was another reason why I chose to go DE versus cartridge. I know the DE filter will have it's own costs of ownership, and the Pentair does look like a good option, but I think it's off the table for me.

The QuadDE cartridges, if properly cared for, will outlast the filter...I’m on season 5 with my original ones and they look as good as the day they were installed. I might consider changing them in another year or two but it’s not necessary. So $200 over 5 years is a pretty minimal cost....

A single QuadDE cartridge loaded with DE and soaking wet weighs maybe 20lbs. A standard nylon DE grid array loaded with DE and wet takes two people to lift unless you want to blow out your back.

Also, the cartridges in the QuadDE system are a stiff polypropylene material while the grids in a standard DE filter are nylon fabric. The PP material is A LOT tougher than the nylon fabric and will not puncture or tear easily. Nylon grids can and do get punctured easily (especially if they are not handled with care) and so they can be harder to clean.

Now you guys have done it!!! Time for more research! I originally looked at the QuadDE but again saw the cartridges and shyed away. Back to the drawing board. Please keep the comments coming. Knowledge is power for a successful decision. Thank you all!

My local pool store (mom & pop, not a national chain) has a QuadDE floor model with a cut-away top on it that shows the internal guts. It’s very informative in terms of what the insides look like. I’m sure it’s gotta be a standard thing Pentair gives to its dealers.
