I bought this for my above-ground pool in an attempt to automate the chlorination process and fight off algae from forgetting to chlorinate my pool. I found plenty of videos online about how to install it and I get that part. I've read the manual about operation but I was wondering if anyone had any best practices? I have a 4,500 gallon vinyl above ground pool with a Sand Filter that runs at 1200 GPH. I'm using 3" chlorine tabs. So my questions are:

  • How many tabs should I have in the chlorinator at one time?
  • Following on from that question, how long will they last?
  • There are settings 1 thru 9. Which setting should I select for this setup?
I tend to run the pump for 9hrs per day.

Thanks

My 15,000 gal pool with a 1.0hp pump uses about 6 tabs per week, when I use the chlorinator (usually just when I'm away on vacation). Your system is different, so I think you're just going to have to figure it out by trial and error. I'd start with 3 tabs and setting 5. Adjust as necessary from there.

Be very careful using stabilized chlorine tablets for daily chlorination - they are best reserved for vacations & such.
they are acidic & can tank your ph & ta in short order aside from the fact that they add cya (which never leaves the water unless u replace the water) along side the chlorine they deliver which gets consumed daily & must be replenished. This can lead to high cya quickly & make it hard to maintain the proper fc level for your cya FC/CYA Levels it only takes about 3 dissolved pucks to reach the recommended stopping point for cya in a manually chlorinated pool your size (around 30-40ppm) after that you should manually dose with liquid chlorine.
If you want something to dose your pool for you daily a salt water chlorine generator or liquid chlorine stenner pump is the best option without the risk of cya building up.
