Hello all, I had previously owned an inground pool in Florida, but we are now in Connecticut, and have installed an above ground pool earlier this summer. I have been a bit negligent on chlorine for a brief time and the pool has gotten away from me. It is now time to close up for the season, but im having a hard time getting the water clear. With the inground pool it was easier due to the bottom drain sucking up the dead algae. I did just order the pf-100 kit, so im hoping to get the water situated soon. One question I had is, I have brought with us my electric robotic vacuum that we used in florida. Would this be sufficient to clean up the algae when I finally am able to get it to break down, or do I need a different vacuum? I'm finding it very difficult to brush the pool due to the fact that I don't have a deck around it yet. The previous owners had a pool up to the deck at one time, but this pool was a little lower, so I built it away from the deck with the intent to tie in to the old deck in the future. Any help or advice? Thank you!

Welcome to TFP! Once you receive your TF-100 test kit and can start the SLAM Process to kill the algae, the robot should help to pick-up the dead algae from the floor. It might also depend on the quality of your robot and the type of screen/filter it uses.

Algae is a chemical issue not a mechanical. You will need the chlorine in a SLAM to kill the algae. After that your pool filter and robot will be working to pick up. The majority will be your pool filter - you may have to clean or backwash (depending on type) during the SLAM.

Yes I do realize that it's a chemical issue, I just wasnt sure if the robot would pick up the dead algae or if it was too fine and would go through the screen, and just back into the water?

If its the basket that comes with the bot (mesh screen) the majority of the finer stuff will go right through. The pleated ultra fine one is what you want for that situation (i use mine most all the time unless there’s alot of leaves).
  • Ultra Fine Filter Cartridge Assembly
  • 9991460-R1
As for the manual vacuuming you may need to get in the pool to do that effectively. That is what I have to do as I am too short to reach over the side.
Until your kit comes add 5ppm worth of liquid chlorine each day to keep it from getting worse. (Roughly 1 gallon of 10%)
Use PoolMath

That's exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!

Do you happen to know what this extra piece is? I just got the ultra Fine Filter today and it comes with this piece.
