I have a basic understanding of water chemistry from managing a 90K private pool for 15 years. However, I understand hot water chemistry is a lot different. At this point I have decided on the Frog Ease Floating system.
Found out about Spa Marvel, Total Serum and Ahhsome. JIm at awesome is awesome. He even called me personally about an issue I had a question about.

Anyways, it seems from all research that Ahhsome is the better product of the 3 I mentioned earlier. The tub has a UV-C sanitation system (not sure what that is) if that makes any difference in how you answer my question.

My question is this. Should I use the Ahhsome Hot Tub Jet Cleaner for the initial purge and for all purges and use the Aqua Clarity for regular maintenance or just use the Aqua Clarity for purging and maintenance?

I will gladly accept and suggestions. Just to muddy things up a little, I plan on using Spaguard for my balancing and Spazazz crystals for my aromatherapy.

You will not need the Frog System when using Aqua Clarity. You only need the chlorine. Doesn't matter if it is Dichlor or liquid. Both are great. If you have not purged as yet you MUST purge before adding the weekly dose of Aqua Clarity. Get a good bottle for dilution. Do not use a milk or water jug For the Aqua Clarity. Follow the instructions. You will love it and your annual cost for chlorine and the AC will be under $100.00-$125.00.

He also says:

Aqua Clarity is a type of super concentrated Ahh-Some. This is an amazing product that is added weekly after you dilute it into a gallon container. The dosage is one ounce per 200 gallons weekly. You still need to use your sanitizer of choice along with this. The Aqua Clarity will keep biofilms at bay as well as provide you with the clearest water you have ever seen. Aqua Clarity will constantly seep into microscopic pores and flush out nasties continually.

I want to thank you for the info. You answered my main question. I will modify my Ahhsome shopping cart.

But, always a but...., is there a system like the the Frog that I can use without the blue part (mineral part)? I had the the "Frog" procedure down. Now I gotta go back and retrain myself what to do
with Ahhsome as my primary "treatment." I wish I were smarter. I like to keep things at a 6th grade level.

See if this gives you a new treatment...

Thanks again. When I managed the 90K pool, I just bought 50 lb bags of soda and calcium chloride. Had gal jugs of muriatic acid to drop pH. Can I use baking soda and regular calcium chloride and muriatic
acid in my Hot Tub? I'm getting the Taylor test kit that Jim at Ahhsome suggested.

You can but unless you have strange fill water from a well you should not need baking soda or calcium added.

Wait until you have your test kit and know what your fill water pH, TA, and CH are.

1) Ditch the Frog.

2) When you get your tub, purge it with Ahhsome. You can in theory purge it with AquaClarity, but you would need a bunch. It is easier to just use some AhhSome

3) Ahhsome is not a primary treatment, nor is it indented to be. Ahhsome helps to break down the organic film/coat that bacteria makes in order to protect itself from things such as sanitizer. You still need to add that sanitizer. Ahhsome on its own will not kill anything, it is going to break it loose so it can be killed by something else.

4) That something else is chlorine (unless you are using Bromine). You need to understand the interplay between Chlorine and CYA. If you do from your pool days, awesome! If not, read this. You have a UV system and a circ pump, so that is a plus, but you still need an in water sanitizer (bleach or bromine). The UA system is basically

5) Here is what I do in my hot tub
- Purge with Ahhsome
- Drain and clean
- Refill
- Test pH, CH, TA, CYA, and FC/CC
- Use Dichlor to add both FC and CYA over time until I get to a level of about 30 ppm of CYA
- Switch from Dichlor to plain bleach until I drain and refill again.
- For about a week I check pH daily and add muriatic acid (in amounts of about 1 to 3 oz a day, so a gallon lasts a long time) to bring pH down. pH in a hot tub will rise because of the aeration of the jets.
- After about a week, my TA and pH have reached a happy balancing point and things are stable.
- I add Calcium chloride to get my hardness level to about 300 ppm. Otherwise the Aqua Clarity I use causes excessive foaming.
- I then add bleach 5 or so times a week as a regular dosing regiment.
- I add bleach after every use.
- I add Aqua Clarity once a week.

Notice all that I use is: Ahhsome, Aqua Clarity, DiChlor, Bleach, Muriatic Acid, and Calcium - no Frog, no clarifier, no crazy other things

As for aromatherapy. I would love to use it but I have yet to find anything that is going to not play havoc with the water. Those Spazaaz crystal do not say what the "crystal" is - I am assuming some kind of salt, and adding essential oils is problematic. They say it "works with" the filtration system, whatever that means. Maybe they work great, what do I know, but I am still leery of adding any sort of aromatherapy to at a rate of 1oz to 200 gal. I love the idea, and I have looked for some, but nothing I have found gives me a warm and fuzzy from a water management standpoint.

Our town water is so soft we can only use 1/3 of the recoommended dishwasher detergent. Otherwise, our glasses get all etched up. We have water so soft that the appliance mfr did not believe me. LOL

Where do yall buy your Dichlor and Calcium Chloride? I got the others figured out.
I'm lazy - Amazon

2 lbs lasts me forever. I use it only when I am building CYA.

In my pool I use bulk CYA if I have to.

I have a couple lb bag of Calcium Chloride that I *think* I got a WalMart years ago. I only need it in my spa, I don't use it in my pool.

Which liquid bleach do you use? I'm thinking the regular Clorox will be fine. 7.5% sodium hyporchlorite.

From my zip, it appears my only choice for liquid chlorine is Home Depot. The 3 gal box of HDX. They also have the granular chlorine for me to start with and get my CYA to 30 ppm.
It's 5 lbs for $39. Sodium dichloro-s-disazineditrione 63%. Is that correct? I'm thinking it's way too much for a 355 gal hot tub.

Have you downloaded PoolMath?

Use Effects of Adding and it will tell you that 1 oz of DiChlor will raise FC by 12 and CYA by 11 in your 350 gallon spa.

No. I did skim over it but since I didn't have any "current specs", I didn't put any figures in.

So, I going with a 5 lb purchase of dichlor woul not be a wise decision.

So once I add 2.5 oz of dichlor my CYA should be around 29. Once it's there, does the CYA stay there or does in slowly go lower?

It would last you a long time.

They sell small bottles of DiChlor for spas. Cost per oz will be a lot higher.

The Amazon link I left is for a 2lb container of DiChlor. I just changed the water in my spa this weekend. I added a capful (yes I know, highly accurate) of DiChlor after the water change. The is my standard thing when I change water. It gets my FC to about 17 and my CYA to 20. (I have the same size tub as you)

I then let things be, and the FC come down. Once that happens, I'll add an other ounce or so to get the CYA to 30. Then switch to bleach.

So, I use 2.5 to 3oz of Dichlor when I change my water. I change my water 5 times a year, roughly. So a 2lb canister lasts me 2 years.

I buy the Home Depot HDX brand of bleach most of the time. It is cheaper, and as far as I know, has no polymers in it. You could go with "pool chlorine" or "liquid chlorine". It is stronger, so you have to calculate accordingly. Around here (Northern NJ) some Home Depots carry it during the pool season, and pool stores have it year round (but here, must pool stores have limited hours in the off season). I usually buy a case of 4 gallons at the start of the season, since I use it to shock my pool at opening (but then I run a SWCG in my pool). Whatever I have left over I'll use up in the hot tub, and then switch to bleach when it is gone.
