Filter Bag vs Cartridge Filters (Pool Cleaner)

Howdy, and welcome Tim!

West Texas, I know dirt and dust...trust me. :)

I have carts in my Dolphin M5 and they are my life saver getting very fine dust and sand out of my pool. Other Dolphins have the same types of carts, and reports say they do well too.

I am comparing the Polaris 9550 and the Dolphin Triton. My current cleaner uses a filter bag. The Triton has an optional filter bag. Does the cartridge filters do as good of a job at collecting the fine dirt, sand and pollen as the filter bag?

Having a good amount of experience with both, I much prefer the cartridge/basket. My S300 has the basket (larger cartridge) and it does two-stage filtering, which also makes a difference. The outer stage is a pleated filter (a variation of what you'd see on a home furnace) and the inner stage has a fine-mesh. This setup allows for pickup of leaves, twigs, larger bits of dirt, sand, pebbles, which are captured in the first stage (otherwise they'd lodge in the pleats and lower efficiency), then the pleated filter gets the tiny particles. Best of all, cleanup takes next to no time.

Welcome to TFP!

My old Pentair Legend II pressure cleaner used a filter bag and my Doheny's Discovery (S200) robot uses a cartridge/basket. The robot is light years better and much easier to clean.

FYI, the "filter bag" that most people refer to is for the original-style robots. They had a canvas bag that was fitted around a wire frame that was inserted at the bottom of the robot. While not dissimilar to the pressure side bags, the comparison her is modern basket/cartridge to older canvas filter bag.
