Draining Pool After Rain

I've looked through the form and found that you can drain some pool water using the pool pump itself. In my case, there is a spigot on the pump as shown in the picture. I am guessing I can just attach the hose to that to drain to waste, but just want to make sure since the first time I opened it, a while back, the system appeared to suck in air.

Also just realized i posted this in the wrong place -_-

Is it not normal to have an overflow? Am i lucky that we have an overflow piped? (It’s still too high for skimmers preference but quibbles….)

I just got home and had to pump a good 1" of water out. Still raining and more expected through tomorrow. That's fine. In a couple weeks I'll be complaining about the heat. Ha.
I had to pump my pool out 6x this winter. Last pump, I pumped to bottom of skimmer because forecast was for 4". Didn't happen. Now I'm going to have to pay to fill the pool back to normal levels. Dang'd forecasters.

I can flat out control the weather with draining and our old friend Murphy. (y)

Did you open the valve with the pump on or off? If off it could pull air in. If you start the pump first, then open the valve with a hose atttached, and water should flow out for draining. I don't have an overlow either, and I drain from a valve I put in the filter's drain port, but same idea. Definitely set a timer and don't forget about it!
