Do you have a stair hand rail? Or a grab bar?

I feel a bit uncomfortable going down the stairs into my pool, and so I was considering putting in a stair rail. However, to do so, it would have to be grounded, and so it would involve an electrician and extensive drilling into the concrete.
It seems that most pools I've seen do not have rails or grab bars, but I particularly like them - except for the installation cost. How dangerous is it not to have them? Here are photos of the stairs at the shallow end. The pool is 30 feet long and six feet deep at the deep end.

Lars,

After I built my pool I found that it was awkward for me to get in and out of the pool.. I have no problems getting in and out under my own steam, but need a little something for vertical reference... Had I known, I would have put a hand rail in when the pool was built.

Below is my self-installed hand rail. It does not need to be bonded. You can mount it into the deck, which would require the deck to be corded and inserts installed, so I opted for the deck mounts. It is ugly and I often use this pic as a reason to install a rail when the pool is being built.

That said, I built my pool to use, not to impress anyone. If ugly was not allowed in my backyard, I would not be allowed to swim.. :)

Thanks,

Jim R.

I installed a railing myself - I bought the railing and the anchors and rented a core drill. I was lucky enough to run into the rebar while drilling, so I grounded/bonded the railing to the rebar. It's probably not code, but it's been fine so far....

I also installed one for my inground spa. That railing only has a big plate at the bottom and was installed by putting 4 anchors into the concrete decking. I have not had any issues with that one either.

If it weren't for handrails I wouldn't be able to get in or out of the pool! I'm in favor of them, and putting one in before you need one is the smart thing to do. People tend to lose their sense of balance as they age, as well as knee, hip and ankle issues. Putting in a handrail now means you'll have it when you need it.
