For the amount of information I have received on this forum for my first pool build I wanted to pay it forward by adding some content that I feel will help anyone who wants to add some lighting to their existing system.

During my build I was able to plan ahead and run some additional wiring while the yard was dug up and used existing trenches to run direct burial cables.

Here is some background on my setup for this DIY.

I have an intellicenter I8PSIC40 setup. I have the relays wired where my pool, spa, deck lighting was run on dedicated relays. These relay send 120V to the line side of my transformers that output 12 to 14VAC.

For cables I ran some CL3 14/2 wires to from my audio system (more on that in a separate thread) but these wires can support 300V of power so I ran 3 additional drops behind my pool, I plan on adding landscape lighting and additional accent lighting for my sheer decent, but this thread is for my spa lighting. At the moment I have tested the look and some theories and will be wrapping this up in the next two weeks.

Here is the equipment that I am going with.

LED rope lighting
LED splice kit
Gorilla construction adhesive (clear)
Heat gun
Soldering iron (don't really need it but handy just incase)
Wire strippers
Crimp connectors that heat shrink
Electrical tape
Multimeter
Weather enclosure boxes
Liqui tight with connectors
Understanding of the relay setup and it's connectivity to transformers.
Power drill screw driver

The LED lights support 24VDC at 1A, so using the existing pentair transformer won't work as mine output 12 to 14VAC for the lights I had with my pool package. However the relay does trigger a 120V output to the transformer so my wires will splice into to the "line" side of the transformer.

The LED rope lights themselves are IP65 waterproof, however the connectors and plug are not where why I have the weatherproof boxes going in.

For the clips that came with the LED rope light will get the job started, I don't think they will hold up. So I started by installing the clips with the adhesive and let them cure for 24 hours, after that I used the addition adhesive to run a bead of "caulk" as they leave a small gap between the rope light and the surface the clips are mounted to, this added additional support to prevent the ropes from falling off.of the clips grasp.

Next I ran an extender from the plug and wrapped with white hear shrink and taped with with white electrical tape. More pics to show how I mounted these.

Next my plans are to finish the home run of the wires from the 120v feed from the relays hooked on my Spa circuit. I will connect these to an outdoor plug that will be mounted inside a weather proof box and sealed shut.

More pics coming soon.

There have many here to try and piece something together with led strips but the crux of the plan is always using the appropriate transformer that is meant & rated for pool use. You must be sure the one you use is acceptable or you are going at your own risk ⚠️

Here’s a good thread about transformers

To be a bit more blunt, splicing into the 120V side of the pool transformer violates the NEC requirements for pool electrical safety.

Your design is not recommended for others to copy and you should rethink it.

I didn't say anything about the pool transformer this is my lighting transformer that is powered by a relay.

So if the relay feeds 120v to an outlet for my LED strips I dont see any issues.

Thanks, I am not using a transformer, going to run my 120V to an outlet where my LED strips will plug into it.

Transformers that feed low voltage to lights in and around pools must meet the specs quoted in post 3. Your hacked light transformer does not.
