Anyone tried to build their own led pool lights?

I don’t want to underplay the idea, but led component stuff is relatively inexpensive these days. Between 3D printing and resin casting it seems like there would be a way to make some RGB led lights that could be controlled via WLED.

I did my whole house last year with over 1000 type bullet led lights, quin led dig quad controller and mounting for less than $1,000.

I know Rob over at The Hook Up on YouTube made a replacement rgb led for a niche type light for like $40. But I’m looking more at nicheless options. I see the more lower cost SR and Tre options, but those still seem inflated price wise.

Looking at other posts here, someone repaired a pentair microbrite so one could get a look at the internals of the design. The microbrite looks to be a 12w light. So using 3x4w or 4x3w rgb LEDs should be somewhat equal to the output.

Seems the challenge is to handle the heat dissipation

Just thought I’d ask to see if anyone here might have looked into such projects?

Welcome to TFP.

For safety and to meet NEC requirements, all submerged equipment with people present must be evaluated under "UL-676 Underwater Luminaries and Submersible Junction Boxes." Products approved for use by the NEC must be listed to the UL 676 and UL 1081 performance standards, which can be found on the UL Product Specification website.

I made some (3) using 20mm xm-l color led stars from Cree. They were powered by 12v ul approved power supply and a RGBW wifi constant current led controller housed in weatherproof enclosure that replaced a fiber optic light. The leds were connected to controller using existing conduit and cat6 network cable that i had on hand. A 6 inch aluminum rod 1 1/4 " was used for heat sink and stars were glued with heat conductive glue. Found some Fiberstars lenses on Amazon to seal out the pool water. This all worked well but at end of second season I noticed some water inside one lens but lights still worked. All this came from Amazon and cost about $100 but i had some stuff on hand. The most expensive part was the lenses about $20 each. Wish i had documented the project but wasn't planning on sharing.
