Delta UV sanitizer my thoughts after using one

I have been a pool owner for almost 2 years. My builder talked me into the Delta UV system. With little experience or knowledge I thought it sounded like a good idea. Low Chlorine, save money, clear pool. I have always thought it took a lot of chlorine to keep my pool around 2-3ppm, but I really had nothing to compare it to. Pool has always stayed crystal clear, and I have had very little trouble, thanks to the things I have learned on TFP. I found TFP after I installed my pool.

This summer the Delta UV bulb went out. Easy to replace, cost around $50, I think. A couple of months later, the ballast went out. Very pricey. Delta says they are going to send me one, that was weeks ago and I still haven't received it. So, the system has been down for several weeks. Right about the time it went out my chlorine was really low, so I added the usual amount to get it back in line. I checked the pool a few days later and the level was pretty high. Checked it again a week later still pretty high. After a few weeks I checked it again and it has barely dropped. So, I started thinking. Yes, I am a slow learner! This UV unit burns electricity, sucks the life out of the chlorine, and is expensive to keep running. I think I am done. I dont see any value in the system. For the money I save NOT using it I can buy a ton of chlorine!

I know others may already know this, but I just wanted to sing to the choir.

Yes, UV's can actually cause some FC breakdown as the water goes over the light. While at the same time it isn't providing you very much protection at all. Not to mention you're in SC and we get *plenty* of *free* UV via the sun.

I'd suggest not bothering to replace the light. Save the electricity and FC.

No, not a slow learner. Just trusting and hard to believe that something your PB is installed actually *isn't* what you need and makes one wonder why they spent money on such a thing??

Keep sharing the news, and sharing your tips and secrets of TFPC to all that see your crystal clear pool.

I cant put a lot of the blame on the PB. We had an in depth discussion about salt water systems and various other things. He threw the UV thing in, and said he didnt use it, but knew others did. I did the research (not well) and bought in. I have made worse mistakes in my life.
