i am thinking of putting a dorm sized refrigerator on our pool deck this year. do you think i ought to build some type of cover to go over the top and sides of the fridge? it will be sitting up against the wood fence, so the back will be somewhat covered except for the spaces between the fence pickets. i am just tired of going to the patio each time i want a cold beer. ideas please.

Careful......many a full blown kitchen with granite countertops, 3 types of grills, wet bar, built in fridge, kegerator, mounted tv, mood lighting and ceiling fans, started out with those exact same words and intention!:giggle:

I would protect it from direct sun and rain. You should buy one that is rated for outdoor usage. Maybe you can build an elevated enclosure using the same material as your fence. Add a shelf in the space underneath for storage.

When I built my outdoor kitchen, I used the $100 dorm style refrigerator. Granted, it's under a roof and built in to my cabinets, but it lasted years. I was told an indoor fridge would never work - it worked just fine. Every beer, ice cold. Are you contemplating trying to set one out in the weather, literally on the pool deck?

My Danby fridge has been in my BBQ island for about 3 years and it still keeps the beer ice cold. But, the door face is exposed to the elements and it's taken a beating. The faux stainless finish has faded and stained and looks pretty bad. Polishing doesn't help. This is the primary reason I would go with an outdoor fridge next time.

yes i am going to put it on the deck. then i was thinking of building something to protect the top and sides leaving the door exposed to element. the good thing about it is the fridge would actually be facing north so it would never actually take a direct sunlight exposure, that is why i was thinking of protecting just the top and sides.
