Hi,

My original pump I’ve been using for the cover isn’t keeping up. Have a new in box green expert 1.5 hp. Hooked it up, pump/flow is amazing. however if im not holding it (tipped) it makes suction to the cover. Suggestions for a fix?
I think this particular model is maybe not designed for the cover ?
I’ve had it too long to return it
Thanks

That's a very heavy pump for a pool cover. You could try wrapping a pool noodle around it not blocking the inlets. Might stabilize it. Better to get a pump designed for a pool cover.

Image above looks like a Wane pool cover pump - Amazon.com
The Wayne pumps seem to work very well and seems to last six years or so. Monsoon rain will turn it into a truly submersible pump, but around here the super heavy rain events don’t last more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Within a very short time after the torrential rain event, the Wayne pump has the cover cleared again.

Yes I believe Wayne is the brand. This is my second one of those … and starting my third season as a pool owner !
It takes an insane amount of time for that pump to clear the cover. I thought the first one was faulty … like it pulses on two seconds off , repeat repeat repeat . Every now and then it will actually pump continuously like it should.
It’s not clogged, hose is not clogged. Purchased a second Wayne and it does the exact same thing. The green expert was purchased for a back up “ground” pump. With the Wayne not doing the job I had at least 5 inches of water on the cover this morning, so just held the GE on to get the majority of the water off

Many of us use the Little Giant pump referenced in post #2. I've had mine since 2012 and, impressively, it still works fine with little maintenance. All I do is clean it at the end of the rainy season.
