Cost to replace plumbing and skimmers

It’s whatever the average of three or four price quotes you get from various contractors in your area. The cost of pool installations and renovations is local, or regional, at best. There is no average cost. It depends on the price and availability of labor in your area as any renovation will require lots of digging and trench work. There could be costs associated with fixing any unknown damage that is uncovered while working. Materials will be insignificant to the overall cost unless you plan to change out any equipment as well.

Bottom line - get lots of quotes and do lots of reference checking. What your asking for is not a simple job.

Also, be forewarned that when you renovate an old pool you will likely have to bring the pool up to modern building code standards. That can incur additional costs and modifications.

Seems that replacing a single skimmer in most areas of the country, according to a recent poll in a trade magazine, is in the $1500 - $2000 range. It is not an easy job. If you have copper plumbing, most companies won't touch it unless you replace all the copper with PVC.

I have 3 and flex pvc. So rigid it is.

Question, how do I know I have main drain that operates? Because I usually use a water pump to drain my pool. If I had a main wouldnt the pool guy who retired just use that to drain the pool?

In reality you cannot use the pool pump to drain a pool through the main drain. It’s too easy for the plumbing and pump to lose prime and, once that happens, you can damage the pool pump by running it dry. Also, given the pump/plumbing limitations of the main drain line, the flow rate of water would be too slow. One or two submersible pumps or, even better, a gas driven trash pump could easily drain a pool in less than a few hours while using the main drain could take all day.
