Cost of Abalone?

We are about to start our pool in a few months and have tentatively picked out Blue Surf Pebble Sheen and we too are going to add the abalone . Our builder did not tell us that we may need more than one bag. He did say it was one bag at the cost of $640. I think we are going to have a 22,000 to 25,000 gallon pool. Around there. Would you recommend the abalone and if so is one bag going to be pointless? Also does $640 a bag sound ridiculous ? I’d love to hear your opinion and insight. Also, do you love the blue surf color? Thanks!!!

we just had the abalone shell installed with our pebble-like finish, it looks great for a while but apparently it starts to dislodge and get cleaned away? Around here the cost is around $500 a bag and is hand spread its something that the plaster company people do.

$200 per bag here and we used two bags. It was hand broadcast and troweled in. It doesn’t dislodge or I’d find it in my cartridge filters. Some lesser quality material has been reported to discolor over time, but mine looks the same after two years. Hope this helps.

I'm sure a lot of the cost is location dependent, but around here the bags cost the plaster companies around $100/ea, and the plaster bids I got were $150-$250/bag. My pool is about the same size as yours, and I'm planning on adding 2 bags, hand cast.

We recently did the Pebble Tec / Pebble Fina in Bella Blue, which comes with the abalone shell already in it, so not sure how many bags it was, or what the cost would be for more. But I will say that it looks fantastic! You might ask them how many bags they normally would use in the pebble colors that include the abalone, and go from there. We really love the pebble fina surface, very soft and comfortable.

Yes, it kind of does sound high. We have a 15,000 gal pool, and the entire bill for the pebble fina surface was $3900 -- and that included the abalone shell!

Thank you everyone for all the replies! After speaking with our pool builder they clarified that the price I was quoted was for two bags. He also said he would recommend 3 bags for our project. It will be hand cast and the price is set by the gunite/plaster company, not them. Thanks again!

Hi, just wondering if you ended up doing this? Our pool company is quoting us $1,500!! Our pool is quite small too.
