Compromise on deck or pool space?

We have a small suburban yard 49x30 looking at either 12x24 or 12x26 rectangle/geometric pool (will bump out so deep end will have a 16 foot width). I was thinking better to keep small to save deck but husband thinks more pool room is better-we have 4 kids. Also need to decide whether to do in-pool corner steps or traditional walkin stairs, in-pool steps save patio room but eat up swim area, husband says stairs will actually add to patio and not take away from it. Which would you do? Try to increase patio or go for it with pool, I realize both are small and not a huge difference but it makes a difference when every inch counts.

I would make a 2d layout and add your furniture to get an idea of the space you have. Then you can see if you can have more pool room or deck. The corner steps will give you more swimming space. I have been in a pool that size with 10 adults and we were fine.

That's not a bad size pool overall. I agree on drawing a layout. Try to keep the walk around deck a minimum and dedicate a seating area and a decent area to get to the stairs. Lots of space constrained pools only have decking on 2 to 3 sides and often have only river rock on the far side next to coping

Our PB told us to get a tarp bigger than what you want. Then you can easily drag it around the yard and fold over the edges to get a feel for different widths/lengths. Works great for rectangular pools, not so much freeform.

Given that you’re in Canada, my guess is that your swim season will be relatively short, so you may want to consider how you might use the space year-round. We’re empty nesters now, but even with kids’ parties, deck space was always used as much, if not more, than pool space. Deck space is at a premium with adult parties and even when it’s just our family, as we tend to hang outdoors even if no one is swimming.
