Hello All,

We are newbies to the pool community and have trouble with our chemicals. We have a 24' x 54" above ground pool. It holds appx. 15k gallons of water, we have the frog system in place which is supposed to distribute chlorine to the pool.

However I tested the water (using frog test strips) and the levels are as follows: Total Chlorine -0 Bromine Total - 0 Free Chlorine - 0 pH - 8.4 (maybe higher) Alkalinity - 240 ( could be higher). We have tried two bags of shock and a gallon of muraic acid as advised by the pool store (not at the same time). Today we tried 64 oz. of pool first aid clarifier and the pool has been running all day. There has been no change. I should also mention that we run on well water and although we had 90% of the pool filled with city water that was trucked in; we had to fill the last foot with our well water.

Thanks in advance all!

Hello and welcome to TFP! Well, I supposed the first thing we should clarify is that here at TFP we don't recommend the use of the Frog. Because of the associated mineral pacs, you'll eventually find mineral levels increasing (i.e. copper) which can have ill effects on the pool and swimmers. Do quick search above for "Frog" and you'll see what I mean. The only way to remove copper is water exchange (just like iron from the well), so the sooner you stop using the Frog the better.

Your #1 priority would be obtaining a TF-100 (link below) or Taylor K-2006C test kit. If you already have one, please confirm by adding to your signature with all of your pool info. As for sanitizing, it's simple here .... bleach. Regular old bleach to increase and maintain the required FC level. At this point though, until we confirm what test kit you are using, I would simply add about 1/2 gallon of bleach to the water each day. When you do post TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test results, please help us by posting as follows:
FC
CC
CYA
PH
TA
CH

Lastly, please read/bookmark the vital links below in my signature. They will help tremendously in the future. There are lots of folks here to help, so stick close and ask all the questions you need to. It's nice to have you with us.
