"Clarifier" vs "Flocculant"

I've been reading around various places trying to educate myself on these.

Some sites talk about clarifiers vs flocculants, other talk about "filter flocculants" and "sink-to-bottom flocculants". The terminology seems to be a mess.

What I think I've figured out so far, please correct if I have anything wrong:

- All these things act as coagulants: they make small stuff clump together.

- Flocculants make stuff sink to the bottom of the pool, Where they form a loose gel that can be vacuumed out of the pool. They're horrible for filters, the gel will quickly gum up the sand.

- Clarifiers don't make stuff sink, and are designed to be run through the filter. Eventually they will gum up the sand, but it takes a lot longer than a flocculant.

Do I have this right?

Thanks
