Clarifier - Is it necessary?

I purchased some clarifier from the pool store early this season and I have added it to my pool twice now. It does appear that it takes the pool from very clear to sparkling, but that could just be my mind playing tricks on me.

Is adding clarifier really necessary or is following all of the guidelines and procedures posted here enough?

Thanks, in advance.

I did EXACTLY as YippeeSkippy and Pool School prescribed when I wanted to "polish" my water and make it sparkle, now I do it periodically no matter what! And, the cost savings doing as described here is unbelievable (Even after buying my own DE last year)! Enjoy :D YippeeSkippy

No it is not

What about those of us with cartridge filters?

Cartridge filters will trap much finer particles than a sandfilter.

Adding DE is unnecessary, and can actually damage the cartridge filter element.

Clarifiers should also be avoided with cartridge filters as they can plug up the filter element.
