Cellulose Fiber any safer to breath than DE?

I'm looking to get out of using DE, as I have no where safe to drain it and my grass does not allow it to wash in (clay). I've heard people recommend cellulose fiber as an alternative, but my concern is whether the dust is any safer to breath. I have a toddler who runs in our yard, and when I mow I'm concerned with the dust kicking up.

I saw this research study pointing to the dangers of cellulose fiber inhalation, but I haven't seen that mentioned here. Am I misreading something? (https://academic.oup.com/annweh/article-pdf/46/suppl_1/81/6671768/46-suppl_1-81.pdf).

Thanks!

Welcome to TFP :)

I have no idea but I stayed away from DE for the same reasons you have.. I went with a Pentair Clean and Clear cartridge filter.. It never has to backwash and waist water and I clean mine once a year.. I did buy a new set of filters to change out when I do take it apart, it takes about 15 minutes to have it back in use.. then I just wash the dirty filters later :)

Be careful with the cellulose fiber. I've tried several different brands in the past, and tested it with my DE filter in GA, then tested again adding to my cartridge filter in FL. Both times I had issues with degraded cellulose eventually finding it's way back into the pool.

In addition, for a cartridge filter, it's a real pain to clean out of the filter (I'll never do that again!). I still think my DE filters from my last two pools (using real DE in them) was far superior to the new cartridge filters.
