Can you combine chlorine and chlorine-free shock?

I had a bag of Chlorox Shock Plus left so decided to shock one more time before I winterize. Then it dawned on me the shock I got for winterizing is chlorine-free. Am I going to cause some chemical reaction if I put the chlorine-free shock in while the chlorine shock is in there, or is there a certain level the chlorine should be at before adding chlorine-free so i'm not rendering one ineffective or anything bad?

What are you looking to accomplish?

Non-chlorine shock is also often called MPS, short for monopersulfate.

As its name suggests, it’s a chlorine-free shock treatment — although it comes in 1 lb bags of white, granules that look very much like chlorine shock.

That’s where the similarity ends, however. Traditional shock is a sanitizer and an oxidizer, meaning it tackles non-living and living contaminants in the water, including bacteria, viruses, and algae.

Non-chlorine shock, or MPS, is only an oxidizer, meaning it can only break down non-living contaminants such as sweat, saliva, lotions, and sunscreen.

Chlorine shock is the germ killer, and non-chlorine shock is the waste handler.

Mixing is not a problem but I see little value in using non-chlorine shock. It does not kill algae in the water and you want the water to be as algae free as possible before closing.

Thanks. Definitely cleaned, scrubbed, vacuumed it good, no algae in sight. Ended up being cheaper for me to buy the kit so got the non-chlorine shock in it, so was going to use it just following the directions there. Thanks for the help ajw.

There is simply no need for the winterizing kit.

Overnight Chlorine Loss Test and prove there is no algae brewing. Raise the pool to SLAM FC, or half SLAM and add Polyquat 60.

Done.

In the future, the only winterizing kit you need is a gallon or two of liquid chlorine.

Here’s the closing guide- no magic potions or kits needed aside from your recommended test kit which should be in use all year round
