My neighbor has a salt water pool, or at least has the equipment for a salt water pool, but for now is using liquid chlorine. I help him out once in a while with recommendations from here, he's not fully TFP, but I can get him close, and we were working on our openings, and noticed he had zero chlorine, despite him having a SWCG running. A few tests and days later, we found out his cell wasn't working. Long story, but he still hasn't got it fixed, and uses the Pool Math app to help manage the correct amount of LC to dose each day, and has about 3,200 salt in there. So he has the feeling of the salt water, and doses manually LC each day. Not ideal for me, but like I said, I get him close.

@mknauss points out, only the cost of salt will be your issue, and with a 6,000 gallon pool, I don't imagine you will need a lot of it. I'd shoot for 3,000 PPM if you are just looking for the salt feel and see how that goes. Use the Pool Math app to see the effects of adding so see how many bags you need.
