Calcium Hardness in AZ

So you AZ folks, I had my pool drained and cleaned and now its filled back up and I am getting all my chemicals going now. Testing with the kit I am showing my CH levels at 125 Ever since we moved in with this pool the CH was always sky high which I believe from talking to people here is because the water is from the Colorado River. Anyway the real question is should I just leave it as is or try to increase it since the kids will be splashing it out when summer hits and my numbers will just increase. Thanks for the help.

Odd that with a fresh refill of tap water your CH is only 125. Colorado River water has a CH of 250+.

If you confirm that 125, you need to add some calcium to get 200+ to protect your plaster. Once your CH is above 300 ppm, using softened water for fill water will reduce the issues from the hard water. The CH rise is from evaporation, not splash out.

Not sure where in Arizona you are located.
Odd indeed... Here in the east valley of the Phoenix Metro area, we get our water from three sources.
1. Salt River Project watershed.
2. Colorado River via CAP canals.
3. Ground water aquifers.

All are high in mineral content. My municipal water is exactly 250ppm out of the outside taps.

As Marty points out, your cH will continue to rise due to evaporation. I got tired of having to continuously perform partial dumps and refills just to manage my cH. Finally I went the route of using softened water for fill water. My pool water cH has actually dropped about 25-50ppm due to filter backwash's, since I chose the softener option.

Recommend you do a cH retest.
r.

I would recommend a CH retest also. Make sure you continue to add drops (one every second or so) until the color no longer changes or increases in intensity - then subtract the last drop. Post those new results.

+1 for replacing evaporated water with soft water. That has been working great for me.

My Taylor CH test instructions include two variations. One for a 25ml sample and another for a 10ml sample size. Since your results seem to be about 50% off, I'm wondering if you've mixed up the instructions for the two variations (assuming the TF-100 CH test offers the same options).

Retest paying close attention to which instructions go with which variation.
