I just got a new SWG cell and in the course of the install I had to remove PVC from the filter. For some reason the original plumbing put the cell under the filter, which has always been a pain, but a once a year pain on open. When I put it back together, there was a leak of the join at the filter where I pulled out to do the install. I went to tighten it and it cracked. It seems the only way to fix it is to cut the PVC and pull it off and replace a section. Is that correct? I am not going to do that myself, and if I have to pay for a fix, I will have them redo the PVC to not be under the filter!

Yes, I'm afraid so. That collar will need to be replaced. Might as well take this opportunity to re-route the plumbing better for future maintenance.

There is such a thing as a split union nut for this. You just have to match the sizing and threads. Watch:
Ok calling around and it will be 1-2 weeks before I can get it fixed. I will check into the split union while waiting. At least my leak detection will skip to the step of ‘let the water drain to the height of the leak’

When I replaced the soft hose with PVC years ago, I broke a Union nut where it connected to the return by overtightening the following season opening. Didn’t wanna rebuild, so I glued the break and let it set for a day. Been fine ever since. But, again, that doesn’t fix your routing problem.
I have had a split union installed on my SWG cell for several years now with no problems.

Maybe a good amount of Plastaid to repair the cracks, and a large hose clamp to help support the repair, would help you get by for a little while...
