A little background, in 2017, my original Hayward 1HP Super Pump was failing, the seal had failed and water got to the motor and it was noisy. I bought a Hayward Super Pump as a replacement pump/motor and installed the assembly. I trashed the old motor, but I kept the pump as a spare and I bought a century motor to replace the failed motor. I bought the motor and seals from INYOpools.com and the rebuild went smooth. The plan was to keep the pump as a spare in case of failure.

Fast forward to this season and the pump assembly installed in 2017 is leaking, so I thought it was time to swap the pump assembly with the rebuilt assembly. The change out went smooth right up until the pump started. It started, but seemed a little louder, it started to pick up suction, it ran for 3-4 seconds then a poof, and smoke came out of the motor. When I opened the motor cover, the capacitor had blown.

From reading articles here on TFP, I believe this is a starter capacitor and if it fails within a few seconds of starting, it could be the centrifugal switch. Unfortunately it has started to rain here, so this will wait till tomorrow, at which time I will check the switch for free operation.

I have a few questions for the experts:
1. The pump is setup for 220V operation, but the capacitor states 110Vac, is this the proper capacitor?
2. Is there anything else that I should look at before replacing the capacitor and starting the pump?

Thanks JamesW. After doing more reading on capacitors, I believe there are only three numbers on a capacitor and of course size that you need to find a replacement. So what I need to look for is a 161-193 microfarad, 110Vac, 50/60Hz capacitor that is 1 7/16" diameter, 2 3/4" long.

When I checked the centrifugal switch, it worked fine, but the governor was stuck. I robber the governor and capacitor from my 2017 pump/motor and, the motor and pump are back in operation. I will be ordering parts to rebuild the 2017 pump assembly and return it to my shelf as a ready spare.
