I recently serviced my Hayward DE filter for the first time since buying the house. I started with a backwash which was a minor disaster. The backwash hose is old and somehow I managed to try to backwash with a link in the hose. As many of you know this resulted in a popped hose and a DE geyser until I could get the pump shut off.
I shortened the hose and managed to backwash in to a corner of the yard. After that I disassembled the filter grids to give it a thorough cleaning. Needless to say it was ready to be done. The filter pressure dropped from 21psi to 10 and flow significantly increased after cleaning.
Now I have a DE mess to clean up and I clearly need to have a cleaner method for the future. Have any of you used a DE sock on the discharge pipe to capture the DE instead of spraying it in the yard?
