Automatic suction vacuum sucking in air

We just purchased a house with a pool! I knew it would be work but I had no idea how much troubleshooting I'd end up doing in the first week. This forum provided numerous threads with help, so I'm here to ask another question :)

The pool came with an automatic suction vacuum, it plugs directly into the suction line under my skimmer basket. As far as I know, there isn't another suction line. The vacuum comes up the sides of the pool and sucks in a fair amount of air before falling back to the bottom of the pool. Each time this occurs it adds enough air to the system that I have to bleed air using the air relief valve on the filter. Eventually, enough air is in the system to completely lose suction.

I'd really like to have my vacuum buddy run while we're not home, is this an option? I think an automatic air relief valve could solve my problem, but I haven't been able to find one for my filter (I believe it's an older version of https://www.hayward-pool.com/shop/en/pools/res-in-ground/res-filters/swimclear-i-caswim--1). Can I crack the air relief valve a hair to let the air out? Am I stuck having a beer and watching the vacuum work?

Thanks everybody

Welcome to the forum! :handshake:

Are you sure there is not a port with a cover over it on the side of the pool that the suction side cleaner would go to? Check your plumbing at the equipment pad, can you identify all the lines coming in from the pool to pump suction?

Normally, you must reduce the amount of suction being directed to the pool cleaner line to balance out its activity. So normally you can adjust valves at the suction of the pump to reduce the suction to the pool cleaner line. Also understand that any large objects are being caught in yoru pump basket.

Consider getting a robot in the near future. You will be amazed how much cleaner your pool will be.

If you are intertested in learning more about TFPC, I suggest you read Pool School - ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Trouble Free Pool School book.
