I have a new pool with auto cover by CoverPools. About 6 months old. Same oil slick on top when I open the cover. Same pump as photos in start of thread.

Something I did notice is when I shocked the pool and left the cover open for 2-3 days was that when I closed the cover again the top seemed slimy. My best guess is rolled up wet with pollen from spring, bacteria or mold or something thrived in that moist rolled up cover.

I used pool brush, hose, and pump to scrub the top of the cover, opening 10' at a time.

Long story short, I think a few days of wet rolled cover produces some of that oily substance.

I am trying closing every night and may clean the top again, this time with dawn dish soap to see if I can solve this.

Interestes in opinions on my theory.

Welcome to TFP.

I think you are seeing the general pollution and dirt that falls from our skies combined with pollen.

Thanks for the reply. My OP was moved by an admin from an old thread to a new thread, so it makes less sense without the background.

Original thread Oily Residue On Water Under Auto Cover

Rather than a pump leak I was suggesting something growing when the cover was rolled up.

In the woods near Houston we go through "yellow days" every spring where everything is coated in a dusting of tree pollen. Stuff molds quickly in the humidity and this is the first time I've dealt with it on the pool cover.

I should have thought about it molding before rolling up the cover for a few days to SLAM.

We have an auto cover from Coverstar since 2019 when the fiberglass pool was installed. Once in a while I notice an oily slick on top of the water right after it’s opened. It quickly dissipates. It’s not every time. I’ve often wondered what caused it. My husband wanted to see what the underside looked like. Yes, he partially opened it and with his new iPhone took video of the underside about six feet in. It was surprisingly clean underneath (bonus, the iPhone never skipped a beat). Wish I had answers, just wanted you to know it’s happened to us too.
