attaching new cuff to vacuum hose

I recently posted about needing a new hose, only to discover via TFP the cuffs can be replaced. I was told the standard size hose is 1.5" so I bought that size cuff. It seems to just slide in and out of the cuff though, there's no 'screwing it onto the hose" via the threads. The advice given said we might need to use some silicone sealant to get a good seal, but my husband doesn't think it's the right size cuff since the hose needs to be shoved up inside the cuff above the threads for it to not fall out. I measured the ID of the hose, and it does in fact appear to be 1.5". Are the hoses generally too small to actually thread? And do I just shove the hose up into the narrow part of the cuff with some silicone on it?? Thanks!

Since no one seems to have any experience with this, I've never tried to fix a bad hose end with a new cuff either...I'll say you're on the right track. If the cuff is only slightly larger but doesn't thread in, I would fill the gap with the silicone. Even if it did thread in tight, it would probably still leak air. Put enough silicone to completely fill the dead space. Silicone sets fairly fast but I'd give it a couple days to cure. A solid mass of silicone should have pretty good holding power but the next step up for me would be to use a marine grade sealant.

3M makes a marine adhesive for about $25 in a 10 oz. tube. The epoxies are even stronger.

My husband insisted it was too big, so went to the pool store in town. I guess whoever it was in the forum who said standard hose sizes run 1.5" is standard for inground pools. But ours is above ground, so apparently they run at 1.25". Guess that's why it's too big. Of course no one in town had one in stock, so have to order one I guess. But I"m thinking we're going to end up using adhevise regardless, so I just want to fill in the gap with the larger one!

If I understand you correctly you are going to use a sealer regardless (?).
A quarter-inch difference is one-eighth on all sides. Big gap for silicone to close. I'd see if you couldn't find a large "O" ring (or two) to help. You can try an ACE (no connection to me) hardware store. Or any large independent. Even some auto supply places have o rings. The trick will be to find the store an clerk that knows their stock, not one that has to have a part number. It maybe Google time for you (to research O rings).

Here's picture of the ends, male and female, of our Hayward vacuum hoses. Both are 1.5 ".
