Anyway to remotely control hayward Tristar VS900?

So I didn't want to spend the extra $3k for an omni pl system from Pool Builder. I was ok using my SWG app, and Wifi control for heater, and thought that would be good enough. Well, Now of course I want to be able to at least turn on and off, and see if if its actually on or off with some sort of aftermarket control. I don't NEED it, but it would be nice. I do have an old school intermatic control panel with timer, but that's basic obviously. I was looking at the Pentair EC-523317, but that seems like it wont work with a Hayward pump. Only option seems like the omni PL system, which I am not about to install. Its not the end of the world, just looking for a reasonable way of adding automation to the pump.

Hayward OmniHub is the lowest cost way to get basic automation...

I am thinking of using one of these in a waterproof box.....I THINK it will control speeds using the external relay option of the VSP. Extremely basic, but it would give me remote control of speeds of pump. I can just name each speed, set it in the app. I can even tell google to set speed.

It looks like @Bill1974 used the same switch on his pump.

Replace the pump with a Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF Pool Pump 011075
It has a WIFI antenna and you use the Pentair app to set the flow rate or rpm and the on/off times. Super easy to set up. You can have numerous times that it runs at water flow you want from say 10 gpm to 90 gpm. I installed one on my son’s pool in SE Florida and loved it. Super quiet and efficient and very easy to control flow and run times without a separate control. He has a full size Raypak heat pump I have the Raypak 1/2 size inverter heat pump. He and I control the temp and on/off and run (on/off) times for the heat pumps through the Smart Life App. We don’t have pool/spa … they are both just pool only. That Pentair Intelliflo 3 is the most impressive pool pump I’ve seen in many years in the pool business (now retired) prior to that I had a Jandy Flo Pro VS165. Sell your functional pump on FB marketplace or EBay.

I would like to stay married. Selling our brand new pump that has a 3 year warranty to get Wi-Fi control seems excessive. My wife would officially throw me into the psych ward. I will be trying the simple 4ch Wi-Fi device to control my current Hayward VSP. I will be keeping an eye out for a reasonably priced used Hayward OmniHub which would give me greater control.

This app will work with some of the older AquaLogic/Prologic controllers that you might find on Craigslist:

There could also be a way to connect the RS485/Wifi adapter directly to the pump but the software would need to be modified to directly control the pump without the controllers.

The Hayward automation would have been nice, but I'm a bit frugal. The wifi relay controller, waterproof enclosure, power supply, terminal blocks, switches, wire and bulkhead connector was probably around $120 and a few hours of my time. Looks like I still need to mount the bulkhead connector. Always something to do. Overall it worked fine. The illuminated button were kind of a waste, they face a fence so I don't even see them. Wires could be neater and the terminal block could be mounted too. Programming run times is simpler than on the pump and allows for more options as well.

Thanks for that. I think my best option is a used omnipro in the future. Works as it should, and can be had at a reasonable price at times.

So here's my cheap switch from Amazon. I'm seriously thinking about cancelling my membership. What kind of sht are they selling these days. Opened the sealed package, and this is what I got. Burned up electronics Getting defective garbage from Amazon these days is becoming frequent. So done with this Crud PXL_20250404_231406371.jpg

FWIW, I would use Sonoff's version of the 4 channel switch. Sonoff offers many different types of switches including a thermostat that work well with Alexa and Google. The ewelink app is a solid performer. Sonoff has been around for a while and carry a good reputation with good reviews.

Just my 2 cents...
