Any good alternatives to Metal Out

I've had to use Metal Out recently to restore my pool's color.

Obviously the best alternative would be just to not have metals in the water, but I can't really avoid that right now.

I'm going to assume this Metal Out is just really another product, like some sort of acid.. has anyone had any success with just using a more raw product instead of metal out itself?

Are you on a well or do you use municipal water? I'm assuming the color was off due to iron?
On a well. I've struggled and struggle to find a leak, so have been adding water.
This is the last year on this liner (there are a LOT of patches), and I'm getting to the point where I might just accept that I need to continuously add water to sustain through the next 3 months of pool weather (I live in NH!)

Its either Iron or Copper. I think that metallic green is copper, but I also was looking closely at the plastic on the skimmer and it has that yellow staining which i think is iron ... so both? lol

Metal Out is a commonly used name. What is the full manufacturer and product name?

Post a pic of the bottle.

I've used a few different ones... currently "Metal Out" by "Pool Mate"

The product works really well, but at $13-$17 dollars a bottle, it isn't cheap for a larger pool

Which made me wonder if I could just somehow by a raw version of it to save a little more money

It’s more than likely to be iron. It is very unusual to find copper in well water and if there is copper in the well water you should stop drinking it. The easiest way to test a stain is to use a Vitamin C tablet. Crush them up and put them in a thin sock or nylon. Then sit it on a stain. If the stain disappears then it’s iron. If the stain turns black or dark brown, then it’s copper.

HEDP is commonly used sequestering agent. A lot of metal stain products have it as their primary ingredient. You can continue to use it. Sounds like the bigger issue is the liner and the leaks you are experiencing. Also keep in mind that metal stains are an aesthetic problem, they in no way affect sanitation. So as long as you are ok keeping the pool filled, the stains are really not consequential.

100% on the leaks front - just don't know if I"ll be able to fix them at this point. The patches in this liner are massive (i think the corners of the liner weren't sized big enough, so there is a lot of pressure in the corners, and it tore in the corner.. its terrible).

Thats good to know on the Vitamin C Tablet! I'll try that. Thats also great to know because the 'Iron Out' is 11 dollars for a gallon and a lot cheaper haha.

Is it possible for both to be present? I was going off the fact that the water was very 'green' looking and figured that was copper

Pool Mate Metal Out is an HEDP based sequestrant...

good to know.. I'm going to assume this dosen't simply mean I can just add raw HEDP and achieve the same results insteat right?

I'm just a little jaded sometimes by the pool industry and feel like theres markup. Baking soda to bring PH up for example is significantly cheaper than just buying a 'phUp' product. I forget the exact product, but i remeber my dad to increase the water hardness used to just buy a bag of some sort of salt (I can't remeber what it was) from the hardware store

You’re not going to find raw HEDP anywhere. It’s an industrial chemical that is manufactured in huge quantities and then sold by the tanker truck. So unless you have the facilities to transport and house 1000L containers and the ability to do B2B financial transactions, stick with the pool store chemical purchase.

dang! Okay! Thats too bad. I've delt with high metals a few times this year and buying 6 bottles at 17$ gets pricey fast.

Are there any chlorine solutions I can look at that won't react with this stuff? Maybe thats the better route here
