Hi, I bought my house about nine months ago and the pool has a Jandy DEV-60 pool filter. After turning the pump off and closing the valves, I open the pressure release valve to let the air out. Instead, it is sucking air in. It did not used to do this, so why would it do this now? Is it safe to open the pool filter? I need to check it so see if the cartridges are in good order, as I have been getting a lot of dirt my pool after I have vacuumed it.

Thanks for your help!

Yup, its allowing water to flow backwards, just like putting your finger over a straw, lifting a column of water out of the glass, removing your finger. Water drops out, air sucks in. Completely normal. The only time it is not safe to open a filter is when it is under pressure.

Thanks for the reassurance! How long should I let it suck air in before opening the filter? I stood there for what felt like 5 minutes and it just kept sucking air in.

It will be hard to remove the lid until all the air has equalized. Until then, there is "vacuum" in the tank and you can't lift a lid against it, no matter how big and strong one may be. Once it stops you should be good. A quick way to speed the process is to open the pump lid. You were going to clean it out anyway, weren't you?

Thanks! I'll give it a try.
