Adding pool stabilizer?

Bad? No.
The best option? No.

Adding any solid chemicals to the skimmer could clog your intake pipe (very rare but it has happened here). Also how do you know when it is all dissolved? If you add it, retest a few days later and get a number lower than you expected then we will just assume there is some undissolved in your filter. Without being able to visually confirm the CYA has been dissolved in to the water we will have nothing to go by. Putting it in a sock allows you to know when the CYA is fully dissolved while also preventing possible line clogging and keeping your filter free for cleaning at any time. That is why it is the option we prefer.

I just dump mine in the skimmer, is that really bad?
Clorox thinks it is the preferred method.

It goes in the skimmer and a lot comes out through the return pipes into the pool. I then brush it the best I can.

That sounds like you may have a filter issue..... Anything that gets through a cartridge filter is too small to see with the naked eye, unless something is wrong.

Are you sure the cartridge is seated correctly? Have you checked the cartridge for rips/tears?

I haven't checked the cartrige in a long time, I been thinking of taking it out, but its quite a pain to remove and get back together. Its something like a jandy CS series filter and its impossible for me to get the oring back on. Last time I had to buy a new one.
