I’m considering installing an above ground pool and have been looking at both the Intex and Bestway models of a 16x32 version. I think the Bestway is a foot shorter. Are there any red flags on either brand or model I should be aware of? I understand that the filters that come with both are junk and I’ve also learned that the upgrades along with a larger sand filter and salt water should include a build in skimmer or two and a vacuum scrubber. What is the verdict on putting down a cement foundation and then covering it with leveled or compressed sand and a then adding a heavy duty tarp to keep it from washing away in poor weather? My yard looks like a tiered rice paddy, so I’ll need to level it out. Digging down into lava rock/bed stone is not an affordable option. Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Mahalo!!

Welcome to TFP!

I've owned and enjoyed a Bestway 14x4 foot pool for 4 years now, and it's given me no trouble. The weak points of all AGPs are the metal rails -- I painted them at both ends with Rustoleum rust proof paint and then painted each joint with Rustoleum, to extend their life.

Every spring I go around the pool with my paint and a wire brush, checking for rust Spots.

You're going to want a built set of stairs with a nice wide landing step on top, then get a commercial brand of step floor inside the pool. Those ladders that come with the pools are death traps.

Ditch the crummy filter that comes with the pool and get a proper filter with 1 1/2 inch fittings. Amazon is your friend for this.

Enjoy your pool!
