Is a French drain needed under a Gravel base? Or under a base of crush and run? And is anyone creating a substantial perimeter i.e... 6x6 lumber to hold in the Gravel or crush and run base? Thank you

Maybe not under the pool but around the perimeter of the base is always a good idea especially if there is potential for runoff. You want to divert as much water away from the base of the pool as possible.
You certainly can create a lumber perimeter- make sure its ground contact treated lumber.
Although it is tempting, you must never “build up” to level the base for the pool but instead dig down.
