60% algaecide

Hey Steve !!!!

You may use algecides if they are copper free. (Check the ingredients).

Just so you know (being new here), they do nothing to kill algae. They are a prevention thing only, and really only for closing. Algecide at opening (or during the season) burns up chlorine, leaving you with less of both so it's pretty counterproductive when you are treating the pool.

Follow the FC/CYA Levels, at all times, and algae will never be a concern.

If you have algae already, algecide does nothing to kill it and you need to SLAM Process

Steve,
Please tell us a little more about the situation. "I was told to use it" doesn't give us much to go on. Can you please describe the pool condition, problem you have currently, and your most recent test results. A photo would also be great. Whatever it is we will be able to provide help and it almost never is to add algaecide.

Thanks.

Chris

Thank you for ur answer but it's hard for me in canada to get my hand on a fas dpd test, making it hard to slam the pool. I'm oit of ideas

Hey there Chris, i spoke with a local pool company to come and fix the mustard algae but they said they were busy for next 2 weeks but told me to add some 60% algaecide to pool and would resolve.

I'm going to test water later today and post them and I will also take pictures and post.

Thank u guys again

I get that. Algecide does zero to kill algae once you have it. For everything the pool store/service gets wrong, they misuse this the most.

Thanks much, it'll help us help you.

Can you drive down to Buffalo or Niagra Falls in New York? I believe you are about an hour and a half from there.
Canadians have had test kits shipped to a mail drop in the States and gone down to retrieve them.

Plus that one was going in the $20s at other retailers.

(Before the border shipping headaches of course)

I have it as mustard algae, it dissipates when I move it
Then it's more likely mustard algae, reason I asked is it looked like some were black algae. I'd scrub and vacuum 'till you get your kit then post results here and start the SLAM. Your infestation looks pretty mild and should be easy to clear up. The treatment for mustard algae will clear up black algae also.

I guess I don't understand why you need algaecide. Chlorine will kill the algae. If you shock your pool, you are shocking with chlorine. Shock with liquid chlorine and it will get rid of it.

I use polyquat 60 algecide in my pool in the summer. I agree you don’t need it, but I’ve found it makes my life easier.

I have a SWG and maintain my pH, stabilizer, and free chlorine levels according to the pool math app. But on a couple of occasions in hot weather I still got a dusting of yellow algae that was hard to permanently eradicate even with repeated SLAMing. In my experience, the polyquat (plus a normal free chlorine level) did eradicate the algae in a couple days and kept it from returning. As I understand it, polyquat weakens the algae cell wall so chlorine has an easier time killing it.

So I’d second the advice to make sure your water parameters are all at recommended TFP levels. But I wouldn’t be afraid to add some polyquat 60 if you want to.
