Hi, I am replacing my single speed pool pump with a variable pool pump. The variable pool pump is a 230V. How do I tell if I am already wired for a 220V-240V? This is the picture of the breaker box with 2 poles for the pool pump. Does that mean it is wired for a 220V-240V?
Usually if there is a bridge across the breakers, there is 230v going to the pump. I say usually because you really have no idea what the homeowner might have done so it is always good to verify.
I would look at the label on the pump itself, and see what it says.
You could also google search the pump model, and you should be able to find out that way.
But I used a meter on the voltage going to my pump to see what it was.
You can get a cheap Multi Meter at Harbor Freight for 8 bucks or so, and sometimes free with any purchase. Its good enough to test your pump voltage, and you can use it around the house for other things, like testing batteries.
I've seen a few of those harbor freight free meters not work right out of the box. Be really careful how much you trust one of those free multi meters.

These usually work or don't work right out of the box. If you turn it on and the display lights it is probably working. In any event, if you turn on the meter, turn the knob to the 750 ACV position, put the leads on the wires in the pump (white and black or black and black) you would be able to see if you have 115 volts or 230 volts. I have a couple of very expensive DVM's from my previous profession before I retired in my garage tool boxes, but also have a few of the cheapo Harbor Freight meters in a couple of junk drawers (because they are small) in the house just for seeing if batteries are any good, and verifying power is off in a circuit prior to replacing a switch or plug.
Chuck, very nice pictures and write up about power distribution into a residence in your sig. Lots of good info. Just put a desktop shortcut for that. Thanks!
