This site is so wonderful I always wish I had business cards to hand to people I see buying tons of unnecessary Crud (like I used to do) at Wal-Mart! I am nearing the end of a long green algae neglected pool new owner clean up and if I am so proud that I can manage the pool myself, thanks to...

So letting the kids swim for a bit will accomplish the same thing with much less effort on my part? lol. The final SLAM sprint: Keep the CYA up, when chlorine is needed, send the kids into the pool to stir up the dead algae. Then add chlorine. Rinse and repeat and see what happens.

What a thorough response! It's raining, but I'll try to get into the pool alater It's raining, but I'll try and get in the pool later and try to get the drain outlet off without the pump running. That's a bit of common sense I guess I was lacking. lol I'll go to Walmart and get a gallon...

Brown/Light Grey substance keep appearing on the bottom of my pool

I just happen to be in that same spot with my SLAM. My overnight test was only 1ppm drop in FC, but there are still light brown spots of dead algae appearing (not much, but it's there) on the bottom of my pool. I have to vacuum by hand and it seems to dessiminate as much into the water as it...

Update on my pool progress in general and why this thread has seemed eternally long: LIFE: My addict daughter was life flighted to a trauma center. I many never know exactly why (which, as a retired trauma nurse, is driving me a bit crazy). She is stable, discharged now with a scar that looks...

I just went ahead and did my best and I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. I made enough holes for the water to flow through so I think occasional bleach in the ladder will be all it needs. Now to figure out how to put it back together! Thanks for the reply!

Do your steps have adequate drainage? I don't think mine do. I'm worried I'll honeycomb the thing to the point where it significantly decreases the weight it will hold. lol. I'd really like to put a turkey baster hole in each step as well.

Kellyfair, do you have any pictures of the holes you drilled in your ladder? I'm about to do that next. I borrowed my neighbor's pressure washer and the ladder is clean now.

Thank you. I am back to SLAM mode. Today I pressure-washed the ladder parts that have been sitting in bleach water. Next I plan to drill holes.

My CYA level is 50. The FC is 12. I can see the bottom of the pool, because I see some leaves I missed yesterday when I couldn't see as well.

We're not quite there. I'm going to continue the SLAM until I am CERTAIN. I really want to take the piece (whatever it's called) where the water flows back into the pool apart. It looks like it really needs to be cleaned. After the ladder, I want to examine everything that touches the water. But...

I can tell there is water in the pool, so I'll go add more chlorine. I really don't want to start all over. Thanks.

FC is 12. The pool is clear. The ladder with algae is out of the pool. I guess my first SLAM is done. Can it be? When can I let the kids in? I was in scrubbing a long time yesterday and I’m alive.

I emptied out the sand and things are soaking now. As if a sign from above, one of the teens that lived here before us saw my granddaughter (they were classmates) and she told her the water had "always been green" the whole time they swam in the pool. So I guess that ladder had years to set up...

I know where my drill is! And I've unpacked my turkey baster! I love the idea of drilling more holes! I sense momentum!

Update on the ladder. I took it apart. I don't have a pressure washer, but I have a pump sprayer. I plan to buy a cheap walmart pool tomorrow and soak what I can soak and douse the rest with the pump sprayer. There are pieces cleverly filled with sand as ballast, so I'll toss that and fill them...

I'll be going through the boxes in the garage to try and find & unpack my pressure washer. I at least know where my pump sprayer is. I feel a little stupid about not taking the ladder out sooner.

Oh my word, you were so right! I scrubbed the whole pool again and then pulled a monster of an algae-making machine (cleverly disguised as a ladder) out of the pool. It’s disgusting! No wonder I’ve been fighting the pool! I’ll take measurements again and I’m sure I’ll need to add more chlorine...

I will check the filter pressure when I go out to clean the pool. I'm just going to get in because I can't clean it well dragging a tall ladder around the pool. And I made my living partially because of people my age doing things on ladders, so I really don't want to end up in an ER as a ladder...

My opinion of SLAM so far. I LOVE having just ONE process to focue on and not reading a million differing opinions on how to maintain a pool. -I got very excited when I could see the bottom of the stairs. I -t took me a bit more than a day to get the FC up to slam level and it dropped, of...
