Just received my TF-Pro kit and maybe I'm holding it wrong. First test I tried was the free chlorine test. Instructions say to fill 10ml of pool water and one scoop of R-0870 power. The water turns very dark pink and takes around 90-100 drops of R-0871 to turn clear. We're new pool owners, just moved in last fall and used the company the previous owners had used for closing/opening. They opened on Thursday (24th) and put in opening chemicals (I have since learned that might not have been great). Pool store test (I also know not great, hence the kit, but was there to get a new vacuum hose) came back with 6.0ppm of free chlorine. What am I doing wrong, and thanks in advance!

Welcome to TFP.

Wipe the tip between each drop to get rid of static electricity.

Are you holding the bottle vertically and letting the drop form and fall off the tip? Don't squeeze and squirt the drops out.

Use the OTO reagent and the left side of the comparator block. Post a picture of what the pool water in that block (Ch side) looks like with 5 drops of OTO in it.

Thanks, I am letting gravity do its job. At first (new bottle) they did come out fairly quick at around at 45 degree angle. Now nothing comes out unit I give it the gentlest of squeezes until one drop releases. After 20-30 drops like that there is still no real discernible change from the dark pink color

Ok thanks. The constant shaking and pausing longer in between drops helped. Exactly 30 drops and it went clear. I guess that’s still high and higher than the pool store test. Based on the company that opened it three days ago adding chlorine and algaecide, is it just waiting for the chlorine level to naturally dissipate? Appreciate all the help!

That would be 15 ppm. If your pool has any CYA in it that is not all that high.

Just let it slowly come down. No harm done.

Be ware pool companies can add odd potions that will effect FC testing. They should be consumed over the next few days.

CYA test filled the tube and I could still just about see the dot

Then you need to add some CYA. I would add 20 ppm worth of dry stabilzer via the sock method. Once dissolved, test again 2 or 3 days later.
