I’ve been a proud member of the liquid chlorine club the past two years, and haven’t been able to talk myself into a SWG.

A season’s worth of LC only costs me about $120 - and even this year we’re still at $4/gallon for 12.5%.

The cost of trichlor to accommodate the occasional vacation, though, looks pretty ugly this year.

While I still couldn’t bring myself to pay $800+ for one of the popular units, I came across a Solaxx Saltron Reliant CLG220A, which uses their 25K R5 cell, but comes in a kit designed for above ground pools, for only $550.

Taking a bit of a gamble as I couldn’t find many reviews on this unit - which is also in part why I’m posting this to document my experience.

To break even, I need it to last ~ 4 years. That covers my annual LC cost plus the cost of a bucket of tabs for vacations.

It has a 2 year warranty, and I purchased with a credit card that gives me an extra year — so year 4 will be the gambling year.

Strangely, the going price for this SWG appears to be $669, but it’s only $549 via Walmart.com “sold by Pool Supplies Superstore”. Pool Supplies Superstore is Doheny, and that’s who it shipped from, even though it’s $669 from Doheny directly. Go figure.

Water is still too cold to test it out, but I’ll be sure to provide feedback once it’s running and keep this thread updated with its longevity.

I’ve got the SWG plumbed, and added salt today - now testing at 3200 ppm with my Taylor salt test.

Water temp is still about 50 degrees. Is it OK to hook up the control panel now, or should I wait until the water is warmer?

You can hook it up but I would not start it up till the water is 60 degrees or so.. Most SWG will start working around 60 degrees.. :)

Water is in the mid-50s now and should be getting warmer by the day. I started up the SWG and it appears to be producing as expected.

Cell is pictured near the bottom left. Control panel is the lower white box at the top right.

The SWG comes with connections to hard-wire to 120 or 240. I connected a 3-foot outdoor rated cord instead so I can plug it in and easily remove for winter if desired. The cord is plugged into a TP-Link smart timer outlet so I can control SWG runtime.

Unrelated, but the top white box is the solar controller I added this spring as well. Haven’t put the panels out yet for the season, which is why there’s a random pipe sticking up on the return line.

Still need to do some cable management, but we’re up and running. Looking forward to even lower low-maintenance this Summer.

So the display on the SWG controller doesn’t provide much data. There’s a light for Low Salt, Check Cell, Water Flow, and System Error. That and settings 1-8 for production, which at least for my calculations I’m assuming are 12.5/25/37.5/50/62.5/75/87.5/100%, accordingly.

Not a lot to go off of for any potential future troubleshooting. I was able to track down a tech guide which includes steps on how to access data for production hours, temperature, volts, and amps. It also goes over how to reprogram for different cell sizes, so seemingly one could replace the 25K cell with a 40K cell (or vice versa).

I’ve attached that guide here - hopefully it can be of use to someone with this system in the future.

Year 2 Update:

The SWG worked perfect last Summer. It took some time of course to get my settings dialed on, but the result was only that I was overproducing frequently and had to let my FC drift down.

Water hit 62 today so I fired up the SWG for Year 2. Everything is working as expected. I got lazy in the fall and left the control panel out all winter (but not the cell), and it handled the cold/snow just fine.

Excited for another Summer of trouble free maintenance!

Year 4 - fired up the SWG today and still producing like a champ.

The cell is the only thing that gets brought it over the winter, everything else has just stayed outside.

So far this investment has been well worth it. (y)
