Hey everyone! This site has been a great resource for me after purchasing my first house with a pool in 2023. Now I'm finally making a post instead of lurking...

We just got some quotes to replace our sand filter (Sta-Rite from 2008) and pump (1HP/3450rpm mystery brand single speed). For context, we have a SWG (Intellichlor IC20) and our pool is somewhere in the 17,000-20,000 gal range (mostly a guess based on measurements and 1 summer of watching the chems). We aren't planning to add any complexity to the pool, it's just 1 skimmer, 2 returns, and a non-functional main drain (plumbed into the 2nd skimmer hole). No need for fancy automation. The pump developed a slow leak last fall and we want to upgrade to a VSP for the power savings with the SWG. The filter is fine, except that our backwash line is connected underground to the sewer system and there's some kind of leak under the concrete, so we've been lugging a backwash hose all the way to the cleanouts in the front yard each time we needed to backwash. We figured it would be a good time to switch to a cartridge system since it doesn't need backwashing (no more hose and wasting salt, yay!).

We live in a MCOL/LCOL area but pools are not so common here, so the companies are few and far between. The two quotes we got were slightly different in what they recommended (see screenshots for details), but Company A came out to $5,420 and Company B to $4,187 or $4,822 (depending on the pump HP). I have a couple of questions before I commit:
  1. Do these prices seem fair? The more expensive company was - of course - more professional and prompt in their replies and my partner likes their "vibe" better. We've had bad luck with finding people that do good work so far (1st time homeowners), so maybe we're being extra cautious. We've done almost all of the pool maintenance ourselves so I have no concept of what's fair.
  2. I did some reading up on here before getting quotes and I decided it would be a good idea to get an 'oversized' ~3HP pump so that we could run it at a lower RPM for longer to generate chlorine with the SWG.
    1. Company A has told us "In this situation we would be unable to install the 3hp version, due to your pool only having a single suction pipe at the equipment. To install the 3hp pump we would need a minimum of 2- 2" suction pipes at the equipment." Is that something you've ever heard of before? Would it be an issue to purchase an oversized pump in this scenario? In all my reading it was never mentioned.
    2. Company B quoted us the extra cost, totalling out to $4,822. However, now I'm worried that there's some issue with an overpowered pump possibility.

Sorry that came out to be super long!!! Thank you for reading!

TL;DR: Is $4k-$5k a normal ballpark for filter and pump replacement? Is there any issue with installing an oversized pump into a pool with only one suction line?

I just installed a new calimar 3.0hp VSP pump last night. Took me 20 minutes to swap out my old whisperflo. What pump do you currently have? I paid right around $700 shipped to my house (TX) with sales tax and a 3 year add on warranty. Take that out and I would have gotten out around $600. Poolsupplyunlimited.com

@duraleigh and @Mdragger88 have been known to comment on filter sizing. You can check doheny’s to get a sense of pricing for both filter and pump.

I will have to defer to others on the 2 suction pipe requirement for a 3hp pump- i have not heard of this…
Let’s also tag @ajw22

However, your swcg is undersized for your pool volume. Ideally you want a cell rated at least 2x’s the size of your pool’s volume as the rating is based on it running full stop 24/7 which is not really something you want to do. It will reach the end of its 8-10k hr life span quickly to keep up with chlorine demand.
Once that cell bites the dust swap it for a 40k cell.
Pentair equipment is good but it certainly comes at a price. Part of that price is paying for professional installation.

Our pump is an old single speed with hard to read stickers, and I think the actual motor has been replaced at least once, this is what's on it now: 1 HP Conservationist C-Face Pump Motor. The basket housing has a small crack that pulls in air and there's now a leak at the impeller (I'm not 100% on the terminology so that might be wrong, but you get the idea). We did think about ordering the pump and installing ourselves, but to be honest the wiring in the old mechanical timer is a clusterF and I would be much more comfortable having a pro fix it this first time around. I'm aware of the risks with a SWG being wired wrong so I'd like it to only have power supplied when the pump is running too. My DIY is not quite up to that level (yet!).
Thank you for the links, I will check those out! Unfortunately both companies have told us they will not install customer purchased equipment

Yeah, I can kind of see where they are coming from with the skimmer-only setup we have. I would guess it pulls a high volume of water through and they worry the skimmer won't keep up at full speeds, but I don't ever plan to run it at full speed. I have to remind myself they deal with a lot of people who know 0 about their systems and they are probably trying to avoid risks.
Thanks for the heads up, but I know our IC20 is undersized. There's a lot of ...choices made by the previous owners that we have to deal with:hammer: Slowly chipping away at them . We had to run the filter a LOT last summer. We have high UV here in ABQ (often an index of 11-12 in the summer), and found that a solar bubble cover helped the FC stay high without running the pump 24/7. When this SWG dies we'll swap it for a higher powered one.

Do you think there's any reason to get the Intelliflo3 over the WhisperFlo if we don't intend to add pool automation? I'm perfectly content using the built-in schedules on the pump and not getting any more complicated than that.

I like the idea of the intelliflo3 so that it can control the SWCG. Certainly you can program the 3hp to low speeds so plumbing in theory shouldn't be a problem. I wonder if during priming (every time the pump first turns on it typically runs at max speed to prime) that the plumbing may not be able to accommodate demands from the pump? Might it be possible to set priming speed to a lower rpm? Hopefully someone with more experience with this pump chimes in.

Whisperflo VST is a fine pump.

To be clear - when its time to replace the cell you can just buy the ic40 cell instead (or even ic60 if you’re flush with cash 💰). You don’t need anything else. They all use the same power supply you have and fit in the same space. Direct drop in.

Also note that 1 quote is for a 520 cartridge filter & superflo pump (get confirmation of the exact model and hp since it says 2 things on there).
And 1 is for 420 cartridge filter & fancier pump which you don’t care for.

The bigger the filter the better of course, if you want to pay for it.

These are apple to oranges so its hard to compare what a good price is.
I do appreciate the breakdown from the 520 quote.
I would suggest asking for a detailed breakdown quote from the 420 people for the 520 & the same superflo to determine which contractor is the most fair.
Fwiw - the price of the 520 they quoted is a little cheaper than what you can buy it for yourself currently at most retailers.

Thanks! In a previous email they were a bit strange with the model numbers, saying "Our stock # is completely different than what you could find on the net. Ours is Trade grade." so I'm not sure how much more detail I'll be able to get from them. Just reached out to clarify the HP and ask about WhisperFlo as well. Thanks for catching the mismatch in the quote, I totally missed that!

I can understand that.

You might consider calling an electrician, texting them a couple of photos, and asking them for an hourly rate and maybe even a rough estimate of what it would cost to wire that pump in for you if you thought you could handle the plumbing on your own. Since this is essentially the same job I did Monday night, I will tell you that I think my electricians could have done it for 200 or 400, depending on which one I called (the cheaper one does a lot of residential, the expensive one is really geared for commercial service work). My $700 "white label" pump plus a $200 electrician would have put me at $900, excluding any plumbing because I did that myself. You can start to do the analysis yourself from there...

Regarding the 3hp motor and the suction line size, I can't speak for others, but nowhere in the Calimar install manual does it describe a minimum inlet. From the manual:

"Piping
1. For improved pool plumbing, it is recommended to usea larger pipe size.
2. Piping on the suction side of the pump should be thesame or larger than the return line diameter.
3. Plumbing on the suction side of the pump should be asshort as possible."

Do what you are comfortable with. This group will be here for whatever level of help you need.

Ask them what the "Trade Grade" model numbers are.

All the Pentair model numbers, Trade Grade and EC, are listed on the Pentair website.

Pentair wants "Trade Grade" equipment sold only through authorized dealers and not through the Internet and eCommerce. It just takes a bit of digging and inquiry to get pricing on Trade Grade equipment. There are ways to buy some stuff through the grey market.
