Hi Everyone, I have a 31 yr old inground pool (28,000 gals) and had to replace the sand filter 2yrs ago when the old one started leaking at the seam. The new Hayward W3S244T had problems at the start with leaking at the drain cap and very minor leaking up at the neck. The recommended solution from the nearby pool store was to put pipe dope on the drainn cap threads or take out all the sand and ship it back (on my dime). Good or bad I opted for the pipe dope, but at the end of last season the cap completely failed and cracked away from the filter body. I thought maybe this filter was a fluke since my first one lasted 29 years. But I started reading these threads about others having similar with leaking and I thought I should consider a different brand.

Current set up:
  • Pentair Superflow (2 speed) EC340042 HP 1.0/.12 SF HP 1.25/.15
  • Pipes are 1.5"
  • Pentair Intellichlor ic40 Salt Cell
Q1) Should I purchase another Hayward or buy another brand like Pentair. If Pentair, what model would I need?

Thanks very much in advance!

Welcome to TFP!!!

Are you stuck on a sand filter or would you consider a cartridge filter?

The Pentair Clean and Clear PLUS in the 420 or 520 size is a nice solution.
We have a few members that got the competitor Waterway Crystal Water Cartridge Filters in either 425 or 525.

Then, based on price, are you willing to replumb? Replacing what you have with Same/Same, if it is on unions, would be drop in replacement.

Might consider the Hayward S244T. The W3S244T version has a 1 year parts only warranty, while the S244T has a 3 years parts 1 year labor warranty.

Any 24" sand filter can have the same problems these days...

You can connect the 1.5 to 2" with a sleeve...no issues.

Hi, I would prefer to stay with the sand filter because I'm very familiar with how it operates, plus we're planning to put the house on the market this year (downsizing) and would like to keep my expenses down.
If you will be selling the house why do you care about switching brands?

Just replace it with another of the same model and it is a simple install as sand filters go.
