I'm replacing my single speed pool pump which is connected to my EasyTouch panel with a new Pentair Superflo VST pump. The current pump is turned off/on by the schedules menu on my EasyTouch panel. Am I correct in assuming the new Superflo VST pump can only be controlled by the EasyTouch panel in the same way as the old pump, ie on/off schedules only. The variable speed will need to be controlled on the pump panel itself. Is my thinking correct?

External Control
This pump can be externally controlled via digital inputs using the Digital Input Wiring Kit (P/N 353129Z - Almond) or the RS-485 Automation Wiring Kit (P/N 356324Z - Black).

See External Control via Digital Inputs, page 6.

SuperFlo VST and SuperMax VS pumps can be externally controlled by most Pentair control systems via an RS-485 connection using the RS-485 Automation Wiring Kit (P/N 356324Z - Black).

The pump address and other settings can be programmed from the pump's keypad.

See External Control via RS-485, page 5.

When connected to external controls, the pump will prioritize commands as follows:

RS-485 > Digital Inputs > Drive Programmed Schedule

Refer to the control system manual for further details on how to connect and program your pump with your control
system.

External Control via RS-485.

The following instructions only apply to SuperFlo VST and SuperMax VS pumps manufactured after 10/15/20.

For all other pumps, refer to External Control via Digital Inputs on page 6.

These pumps can be controlled from certain Pentair control systems, via an RS-485 signal, when paired with the RS-485 Automation Wiring Kit (P/N 356324z - Black).

Note: IntelliConnect Control and Monitoring Systems can NOT externally control this pump via RS-485.

The pump will need to be connected via digital inputs.

Refer to External Control via Digital Inputs on page 6.

Note: If the pump is manually stopped using the Start/Stop button, the pump will not run until the Start/Stop button is pressed. If the Start/Stop LED is illuminated, the pump is active and can be controlled externally.

Only the GREEN and YELLOW conductors will be used to wire the pump for external control via RS-485.

See Figure 4.

Refer to the control system manual for further details on how to connect and program your pump with your control
system.
The EasyTouch manual does not indicate any pump other than a intelliflo can be connected via a data cable. In fact the EasyTouch manual indicates a 2 speed relay must be installed to operate a 2 speed pump. So it appears that the superflo pump I purchased can't really be controlled by an EasyTouch system except for the on/off function.

Tim,

I would have recommended a different pump, but since you already have the SuperFlo VST, look at the S/N label on the pump end and tell us the date it was manufactured..

All newer SuperFlo pumps can be controlled by the EasyTouch using the RS-485 com port connection.. You just need to right cable

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks guys for your help. The pump is a Superflo VST which was purchased last week. Product code 342002. It has the 8 pin cable connection port on the side of the pump. Has Pentair updated their EasyTouch manual to describe how to connect this Superflo VST pump? I downloaded the EasyTouch manual from their website and it does not mention anything about the Superflo VST pump.

No, Pentair is not good about updating manuals when other products change.

Buy or build the comm cable. Details are in Pentair Superflo VS Pumps - Further Reading

Connect the yellow and green RS-485 wires to the RS-485 COMM block in the EasyTouch.

Then tell the EasyTouch you have a VS pump.
