new build and have the Pentair TA60 sand filter. Until today I had not installed the filter gauge. I did buy the really nice one of tftestkits.net

Once I installed I ran, before backwashing, and with the diverter valve set to run through the HP I had just shy of 10psi at 40gpms. When I bypassed the HP completely I have about 2psi at 40gpm. When I drop my pump speed to my normal 20-25gpm the gauge doesn’t even register.

Is this normal?

Pics attached are the pressure read at 40gpm with the HP bypassed entirely.

How does the flow feel out of the pool returns.

Sounds normal for your pool.

Flow is amazing. 40gpm shoots alone heck of a stream! Ha. But even 20-25gpm is a strong jet.

My gut says it’s normal, but thought I’d check.

So, that said, when should I backwash it? What should my indicator be?

When I get 2psi reading at 20-25gpm flow?

40 GPM with your heater on gives you 10 psi clean. Use that setting and when your PSI is around 13-14 you should backwash. See when you can feel your return flow drop. As you learn your pool you will see the indications on the pressure gauge or return flow that your filter needs backwashing.

What you're seeing is normal. My pool behaves similarly. You can really see the advantage of an external bypass.
